Is the Ransomware Threat Being Taken Seriously? That is the question that comes up when we look at this year’s Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) and recent attacks. Ben Carr, Ryan Golden, and Anthony M. Freed sat down in our Security Gets Serious Podcast to discuss the findings from the 2024 DBIR, released in May. Ransomware is now a threat across 92% of industries, according to Verizon. While we know that organizations in certain segments – healthcare, manufacturing, financial technology, and insurance – are the most lucrative for RaaS groups if penetrated, the report demonstrates that cyberattackers are casting a wider net. Which means every industry and every organization worldwide is in danger of attack – at any moment. 2024 has brought a myriad of high-profile ransomware attacks, from Change Healthcare in February at a reported $22M ransom paid and over $1B in expected overall cost, to the June attack against CDK global that paid a yet undisclosed amount to restore its systems in the $1.2 trillion car dealership market. How Prevalent are Ransomware Attacks Across Organizations? This is the question that Halcyon set out to answer in our new Ransomware and Data Extortion Business Risk Report. There are an estimated 1.7 million ransomware attacks every day – or 19 attacks every second. But this statistic only tells part of the story. How successful are these attacks, and how equipped are organizations to prevent these attacks using current tools? Halcyon surveyed 913 security and IT executives working at organizations that were targeted by ransomware operators in the last 24 months about their ability to defend against – and quickly recover from – ransomware attacks. The report revealed several key findings, including the fact that: 1. Organizations are overly confident in their ability to defend against and quickly recover from ransomware attacks 2. Data exfiltration is becoming nearly as big of a problem for victim organizations as the actual ransomware payload 3.
