In celebration of Pride month, hear Kat Ricker's powerful story as our June Employee Spotlight and president of the General Mills Betty's Family (LGBTQ+) Employee Network:
"Growing up, I didn’t have role models to help articulate how I felt, as someone who identifies as bisexual. When I joined Betty's Family Network, first as an ally, I saw the full spectrum of identities. I saw individuals showing up as their authentic selves and being fully accepted for who they are. I saw the power of coming out, and the weight that was lifted once finally spoken.
When I came out, I knew I had many future conversations ahead of me in my personal life. But not at General Mills. This company has such a unique and inclusive culture that I didn’t have as many fears, and when I told my personal story during National Coming Out Day in front of 1,000 employees, the response was incredible. I still feel that invisible hug to this day, and it's something I try to replicate for others.
I love Pride month because it’s all about celebrating and championing who we are – both in the loudest ways and in the quietest moments. Today, I relish the feeling of acceptance at events with a proud smile on my face. I also try to celebrate Pride in the small acts: learning, exploring LGBTQ+ owned businesses, listening to my coworkers, and hanging out with my husband and dogs, who show me endless love and support for who I am every day."
