"A single mother from Trinidad, Tricia Alcaraz always wanted to work with children. After trying pediatric nursing and running her own daycare, she spent 15 years working in New York City schools. She started as a paraprofessional and worked her way up to a teaching role while taking college classes, but she was never a fully certified teacher." Gateway U Teacher Pathway helped her get across the finish line. Thanks, Chalkbeat Newark and Jessie Gomez for highlighting Tricia's story and our teacher pathway program! #MORETEACHERSFORNJ -- cc: Bonnie Delaune Kwame Floyd Dr. Gemar Mills Dominique Lee Chaleeta Hines Saymah Nah, M.Ed Adam Shapiro | BRICK Education Network Great Oaks Legacy Charter School Trio New College Network https://lnkd.in/exdrVxr2

Have you heard the amazing news about our Teacher Pathway?! Thanks to efforts by Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz and Senator Renee Burgess, needed funding for the Teacher Pathway Program was provided in the FY24 State Budget. Additional funding for the initiative was provided by the New Jersey Children's Foundation, Community Foundation of New Jersey, and Panasonic Foundation. These funds will support one-on-one coaching, provide exam preparation resources, and cover certification fees for participants in need! DeAndre Gray, a teacher at Newark's Achieve Community Charter School (BRICK Education Network) and a Gateway U Teacher Fellow stated, "Having gone through the training and certification firsthand, I know the challenges and saw great candidates here in Newark fall through the cracks. These are challenging times, especially in the area of public education. We not only need teachers in New Jersey, but we need great teachers who understand and are committed to Newark. I am grateful to Gateway U's commitment to Newark and specifically helping local paraprofessionals and degree-seeking school staff who want to continue serving Newark as certified teachers. This is a great collaborative effort that will make an immediate impact on our schools.” For more, read the full press release below. --- cc: Kwame Floyd Lizette Chaglla Bonnie Delaune Dr. Gemar Mills Chaleeta Hines Dominique Lee Saymah Nah, M.Ed | KIPP New Jersey BRICK Education Network College Achieve Public Schools (CAPS) Great Oaks Legacy Charter School Queen City Academy Charter Sch Trio New College Network
