There is no “safe” level or type of Legionella. Legionella testing results alone do not measure health risk or predict disease. For this reason, routine testing is essential in maintaining a comprehensive Water Management Program (WMP) where results have been interpreted based on concentration (e.g., CFU/mL), the extent of colonization (e.g., % positive), and the type of Legionella. The CDC recommends routine testing for Legionella. Testing may be helpful for routine and non-routine purposes, such as: 👉Establishing a baseline measurement for performance indicators. 👉Validating a WMP. 👉Evaluating potential growth and transmission sources. 👉Confirming success or failure of remedial treatment. 👉Investigating potential sources of environmental exposure for persons with the disease.
