By 2050, an estimated 35 million new cancer cases will occur globally, with 23 million in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Fred Hutch has a growing cross-divisional Global Oncology program that investigates globally relevant cancers and seeks to understand the varied genetics and biology of common cancers around the world. We aim to develop high-impact, low-cost diagnostic tools, and therapies that can be used in low-resource settings worldwide. Our 2024 #GlobalOncology Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/gKgUV3nu

Erica Peters was working with sarcoma patients when she received her own myxofibrosarcoma diagnosis 10 years ago. “I had been working in clinical trials for about three years when I was diagnosed,” said Peters, a clinical research manager for the Fred Hutch/University of Washington radiation oncology research team. “I’m working in sarcoma — what are the chances? It was like, ‘I’m in the same situation as the people who are here to get treatment.’” Her ability to empathize with other people with cancer has served Peters well over the last decade. She and her teammates coordinate clinical trials in radiation oncology, managing patient participants’ schedules and care and helping them navigate any adverse events. Getting burned from even one day out in the bright sun can be harmful says Dr. Lindsay Gunnell, a Fred Hutch dermatologist with a background in skin oncology. So if you're heading outside to enjoy a beautiful summer day, make sure to regularly apply sunscreen. "Melanoma and basal cell skin cancer specifically are more likely to happen for people who have intense, intermittent sun exposure, as opposed to chronic, low levels, or even high levels of sun exposure," she said. Seeing things like this never gets old. We're proud to have faculty members like Sita Kugel who take mentorship beyond the bench to prepare the next generation of scientific leaders for whatever lies ahead. 💙🔬

As I move on to the next stage in my career, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my incredible PhD mentor Sita Kugel. Her guidance and support has helped me grow so much as a scientist and as a person. I have learned so much from her and she has prepared me to take on any new challenges that may come in this next stage of my career. I also want to highlight that Dr Sita Kugel won the McDougall Faculty Mentoring Award this year which highlights her dedication to mentorship and support of all her trainees. I cannot emphasize enough how deserving she is of this award. Below I have included an image of text from the Fred Hutch announcement of the award which includes wonderful highlights from the nomination letters. Endpoints are how scientists demonstrate whether whatever they're studying is a boom or a bust. But with patients living longer, some cancer trial endpoints are starting to change. A few months back, good news hit the multiple myeloma community: the U.S. Food & Drug Administration voted to accept a new endpoint — MRD, or measurable residual disease — for accelerated approval of treatments for this cancer. What does this mean for myeloma patients? Everything, per Fred Hutch hematologist-oncologist Rahul Banerjee, MD, who treats patients diagnosed with this slow-growing cancer of plasma cells. Fred Hutch has launched Partners in Science 2.0 @ Fred Hutch (PS2@FH), a new summer research program that trains middle school and high school teachers in Fred Hutch labs to expand hands-on learning experiences they can take back to the classroom. “By providing teachers with research experiences and resources, we are also making it possible for them to empower the next generation of scientists,” said Jeanne Chowning, PhD, associate vice president of Science Education and Community Partnerships at Fred Hutch. People don’t experience #cancer alone, they experience cancer as part of a workplace, a family, a community. Obliteride is a way for everybody to get involved. The pride and the joy that it brings people is remarkable. Obliteriders also support some of Fred Hutch’s most groundbreaking work. Grants only cover about 70% of the cost of the lifesaving advances we are pursuing here. Obliteriders’ fundraising matters. Learn more and sign up today: https://bit.ly/4csjXZe
