FloodBreak Automatic Floodgates are known for protecting vulnerable openings in buildings and garages but our passive automatic floodgates are also used in important infrastructure projects like Rawhide Wash in AZ where our floodgates extend the floodwall system across the road to keep floodwaters in the arroyo. DDC is working hard to protect thousands of residents on the Lower East Side from sea level rise and storm surge while continuing to preserve views and access to the waterfront. We are making progress on the Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resilience Project. Construction continues on the floodwall with the installation of subsurface foundation micropiles and jet grouted seepage barrier. Concrete pours continue to establish the fixed floodwall foundations, stem walls, and flip-up gate pile caps. The first flip-up gates arrived onsite for assembly, and the work is ongoing on aligning and bolting each gate segment before anchoring to the concrete pile cap. The flip-up gates are hydraulically activated into the vertical deployed position. They are fabricated in Houston, Texas by FloodBreak Automatic Floodgates, then shipped and assembled on site in NYC. They are made with corrosion resistant aluminum and stainless steel; their height varies from 5 to 12 feet. Overall, the project consists of 1900 linear feet of floodwall; 89 flip-up gates; 6 roller gates; and 2 swing gates. The gates will remain in their down and locked position until they are raised for routine maintenance, inspection and exercising, and in preparation for an approaching coastal storm surge. This week marked a #tremendous milestone for the Brooklyn Bridge - Montgomery St. Coastal Resilience Project with the first section of flip-up gates successfully delivered and installed. In observance of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, we reflect on our ongoing efforts to support communities in safeguarding against flooding. Walter P Moore contributed to fortifying the 50-acre Kingwood High School campus, helping mitigate the risk of flooding events. We thoroughly assessed the campus infrastructure to develop an effective flood protection strategy, incorporating passive systems to safeguard entrances, windows, and utility stub-outs. Our innovative approach included the strategic installation of float-up gates designed to withstand flooding while maintaining the integrity of the buildings' structural and utility systems. The Kingwood community faced significant challenges during recent heavy rainfall in Houston and surrounding areas.
