Exploring new worlds, searching for life.
About us
We are living at a pivotal time in human history, as technology is advancing to the point that we will be able to answer one of the most fundamental questions: Are we alone in the universe? This quest alone justifies the investment of billions of dollars in robotic exploration of our solar system and the construction of powerful astronomical observatories on Earth and in space. Since the discovery in 1995 of the 1st planet orbiting a star other than our Sun, astronomers have confirmed the existence of several thousand exoplanets. Thousands of additional candidates have been identified, including rocky Earth-like planets. Over the coming decade, the new generation of telescopes and instruments will allow us to probe the atmosphere of extrasolar planets similar to ours for the first time, looking for water vapour and perhaps even signatures of biological activity like oxygen, ozone and methane. The Institute for Research on Exoplanets (iREx) brings together top researchers and their students so as to benefit as much as possible from major current and upcoming observation projects, with the ultimate goal of finding life elsewhere. The Institute is devoted to exploring new worlds and seeking life on other planets.

👏 Congrats again, Lisa!
Attending the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings in Physics in Germany earlier this month was a highlight of my career as a physicist. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet enthusiastic young scientists across the globe and to listen to Nobel Laureates discuss their research and careers was truly inspiring and brings me lots of excitement for my own future scientific endeavours. A special shoutout to the enthusiastic and dynamic group of bright scientists who represented Canada at the conference Andrew Cameron Leonid Olifer Jérémie Guilbert Kate Fenwick Thank you to Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings for the incredible week and for the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada for the nomination to this unique opportunity and support. #science #nobel #lino24

👏 Dr. Lisa Dang, PhD, a researcher at iREx, had the honor of attending the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings as a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow earlier this month. This exceptional event provided her with a unique platform to engage with 600 young scientists from various disciplines, fostering invaluable exchanges and insights.
Excitingly on my way to the 73rd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings where 37 Physics Nobel Prize Laureates and 600 young scientists across the globe will be exchanging ideas and discussing the future of our fields! I am incredibly grateful for Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for the opportunity and am looking forward to meeting everyone! #LINO24

We are pleased that our summer interns can have the chance to experience first hand what it is to do observation at a big observatory, thanks to our proximity with the Observatoire du Mont-Mégantic!
This week, Alexandra Rochon and I were able to visit l’Observatoire Mont-Mégantic, where we were able to spend two nights learning how to observe, change the instruments of and re-balance their 1.6m telescope. Huge thank you to Sylvie F Beaulieu PhD and Fidèle Robichaud for making this experience so memorable, and to Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets for giving us this opportunity as part of our internships!

We are really proud of our iREx intern Alexandra Rochon who attended the CASCA meeting in Toronto earlier this month!
Last week, I attended the Canadian Astronomical Society - Société canadienne d’astronomie (CASCA) annual meeting in Toronto and had the opportunity to present my research characterizing the atmosphere of an ultra-hot Jupiter. It was my first time attending a conference of this size and I had such a wonderful time with my supervisor Lisa Dang, PhD and research collaborator Zoe Shu. While there, I was able to visit the University of Toronto, and learned of the cutting-edge research being done by leaders in my field, and the exciting observation missions and telescopes planned for the future. Thank you to my supervisor, Lisa, and the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne for this amazing opportunity, as well as the organizing committee for putting together such a great event!
