13 years ago, I started as a volunteer teacher at Eastside College Preparatory School and saw the impact a personal finance course could have on students and their families. It changed my life too as I made a commitment to find ways for more students to benefit from what I saw firsthand in the classroom by starting Next Gen Personal Finance with an amazing co-founder Jessica Endlich. This weekend was a watershed moment as my home state of California made a significant commitment to the next generation. Thanks to Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom for signing AB 2927 on Saturday which makes California the 26th state to guarantee a one semester personal finance course to high schoolers. Special thanks to State Superintendent Tony Thurmond whose leadership played a critical role in this momentous accomplishment. Teacher voice also played a critical role in this success. Thanks to Christopher Jackson, Crystal Rigley Janis, and Tara Razi for your inspiration and your advocacy. Recently, partners SOMOS Mayfair, Latino Business Foundation Silicon Valley and Excite Credit Union officially unveiled the mural “Freedom,” on the ground floor of affordable housing unit Quetzal Gardens. The space known as “La Esquina” is home to a unique collaborative effort to drive economic mobility and justice for families in East San Jose through advocacy, wealth-building and entrepreneurship.
