Without a doubt, industries have a role to play in the transition to clean energy. But we cannot underestimate the power of consumers in aiding this transition. Today, we’re bringing both parties in. 🔋 We’re announcing the selection of Staples and Batteries Plus to expand ways for consumers to recycle the batteries in their electronics and household appliances. Why? So that the clean energy sector can reuse the critical minerals (nickel, lithium, graphite, etc.) in these batteries that would typically be sourced from China. The office supply store and retailer will provide over 1,000 collection points across the country for spent batteries from consumer products, allowing consumers easy and free access to turn in old batteries and battery-containing devices and reduce e-waste. *This announcement is supported by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and managed by DOE Manufacturing & Energy Supply Chains Office (MESC). “Like it or not, we live in an increasingly energy-hungry society.” And that energy should be clean, reliable, and affordable. Former Olympian Paul Terek talks through how nuclear energy ⚛️ meets those criteria and shares how he transitioned from his days as an athlete to his current, unionized role as a reactor operator at the Diablo Canyon Power Plant. Units 1 and 2 at the plant were scheduled to cease commercial operation, but thanks in part to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the plant is extending operations and will continue to generate clean energy in California.
