China's rapid expansion in renewable #EnergyStorage is setting new records, with 22.7GW/48.7GWh installed in 2023 alone. This growth highlights China's leadership in the global #EnergyTransition. However, such rapid expansion calls for advanced solutions to optimize the efficiency and performance of these storage systems. In 2024, global energy storage is expected to exceed 100 gigawatt-hours of new capacity for the first time, with significant contributions from China's growth, reaffirming its position as the largest energy storage market globally. As Northern California faces the threat of power shutoffs due to extreme fire danger, the importance of resilient and reliable #EnergySolutions has never been clearer. There is an urgent need for innovative energy storage systems to safeguard our communities from the impacts of wildfires. High winds can cause tree branches and debris to contact energized electric lines and potentially lead to a wind-driven wildfire. As a result, there is a chance that may cause power to be turned off during severe weather. This is called a Public Safety Power Shutoff, or PSPS. The sole focus of a #PSPS is to keep customers safe. #EnergyVault is proud to support the Calistoga community with the Calistoga Resiliency Center through a hybrid energy storage facility that combines hydrogen fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries to provide 48 hours of continuous carbon-free energy. These gravity-based energy storage systems could enable some of the world’s tallest buildings to generate renewable energy. Energy Vault has teamed-up with architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to explore how gravity energy storage systems (GESS) could be integrated into skyscrapers. GESS uses surplus energy to lift heavy blocks to height, creating potential energy that can later be converted into electricity when the blocks are lowered to the ground. Unlike pumped hydro storage facilities, which can only be built on specific natural sites, the team believes that GESS installations could theoretically be built anywhere, opening up new possibilities for clean energy storage and distribution. Learn more about the insights from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) 2024 Integrated System Plan (ISP), which presents a comprehensive 30-year roadmap for the National Electricity Market (NEM). The ISP projects that by 2050, the NEM will require 49GW/646GWh of dispatchable storage to meet future energy demands and achieve an 82% #RenewableEnergy target by 2030. This underscores the critical role that advanced storage solutions will play in maintaining a reliable and #sustainable energy future. Grid-scale wind and solar in Australia are expected to increase six-fold to 127GW, while distributed solar PV will grow four-fold to 86GW by mid-century. Additionally, firming capacity, including #EnergyStorage, will need to quadruple under AEMO’s ‘Step Change’ scenario.
