The California Public Utility Commission recently issued a proposed order that states the Net Value Billing Tariff in the community solar legislation conflicts with federal law. According to the Coalition for Community Solar Access: "The proposed decision is flawed in numerous ways, but most importantly, it fails to provide the foundation needed for California to build a sustainable, scalable community solar program, which will ultimately leave billions of private investment and matching federal dollars on the table and ratepayers without a choice for more affordable, clean energy." Community solar is an essential program for ensuring equitable and affordable clean energy access for all. Considering the massive appetite for community solar in California, we are hopeful that this is only a temporary setback to the success of the program. #California #communitysolar #solar #cleanenergy #energyequity

Fun fact: Installing onsite solar at your corporate office spaces doesn't have to be a disruption to your employees. Construction closes out soon for this 1.2 MW solar canopy project, but employee convenience was a priority for our client. We prioritized construction on the most impactful parking areas to help the client’s team know when and where to direct parking and accelerated their return-to-work schedule. Even prior to interconnection, it's exciting for your employees to experience the shade or snow-free parking impact of a solar canopy! #EmpowerYourProject #solar #renewableenergy #clientrelations

    Human-centered leadership professional

This week I have turned the page on one chapter and started another. After 20 years of deeply fulfilling full time engagement in the solar energy industry (aka the “solar coaster”), I have stepped forward into an early retirement. Finishing my career as SVP of People & Corporate Operations at Empower Energies was an honor and it was not one bit easy to say farewell to the amazing team of humans there. I am grateful for the very warm sendoff.  And I especially thank Michael Belko for the invitation 5 years ago to jump on board. It has been my pleasure to work alongside you and the team. A partnership and friendship that I look forward to continuing.  In this life, and especially in this industry, I have learned to say “see you later” more often than “goodbye”. Thinking back on 20 years I am certainly very proud of the things that were accomplished in our industry for which I played my part. The deployment of solar resources in every category has grown significantly: residential, commercial, utility. The public policy environment continues to vex, but solar energy has continued to make headway despite the challenges. 20 years ago, I think the opposition thought it could be minimized or ignored and maybe would just fade away.  Yeah—that’s not happening. I believe we are here to stay, as long as we continue to innovate and adapt. I know firsthand the tireless work from talented heads and hands required to make that happen. The ride has been choppy but one must take moments to zoom out and be immensely proud of the progress. As I look back though, my thoughts are all about the people. There have been hundreds of amazing people along this journey. My mind is flooded with so many faces, names and memories that bring smiles to my face. I can’t possibly name enough of you on a LinkedIn post.  From the innovative and energized team at Chesapeake Solar, to the dedicated and focused team at GroSolar, the ambitious and brilliant teams at SolarCity and then Tesla, and the experienced and committed team at Empower Energies I have been blessed to know some of the smartest, most hard working, amazing people. Some of you may be reading this now. To you I say it is an honor to have worked with you and to know you. You made a tremendous impact on me and my heart is full. My measure of true success is the extent to which teams of people come together with purpose to make this world better one step at a time. For me it has been a very successful journey.  With deepest gratitude I say “see ya later” and Namaste. Perhaps Richard Deutschmann and I will see you out there on the trail one day.

Check out this insightful piece written by Empower Energies Project Finance Analyst Adi Patro about how tax credit transferability, under the expanded ITC provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act, works differently from tax equity partnerships to improve payback periods for renewable energy projects. "Projects can recover anywhere between 30% to 70% of the total project cost in tax credits in the first year of operation of the asset." #InflationReductionAct #IRA #renewableenergy #solar #solarfinance

McDonough MBA, Merit Scholarship recipient I Renewable Energy Project Finance & Tax Equity I CELI 2023

Tax Credits and incentives are some of the most important drivers of investing in renewable energy assets. Monetizing Tax credits has been a challenge for many C&I solar developers because of complexities involved in "Tax Equity" investing. #inflationreductionact promises to change this with "Transferability", a new mechanism for monetizing Tax Credits. In this column, I have tried to share my perspective on benefits of both structures and a comparative analysis of them. Thanks to my peers at Clean Energy Leadership Institute and mentors who helped me pen down this piece. Looking forward to your comments and feedback. #solarenergy #taxcredits #climatefinance #projectfinance

At the beginning of the new year, PG&E released a 13% rate hike, making it California's most expensive power provider. Even with the phasing out of NEM 2.0 in 2023 to a net-billing model, companies have options when it comes to strategically lowering their electric bills in CA. In our latest article, our Director of Business Development, Oran Arms, discusses what this means for commercial and industrial businesses looking to mitigate rising energy costs, and how solar continues to be an economically attractive solution in the sunshine state.

As more state incentive programs come online and the demand for energy equality grows, we project community solar will continue its massive growth trend in 2024. This winter, Empower Energies partnered with a leading nationwide developer to build this 6.7 MW ground-mount system in upstate New York. Empower was selected as their engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) partner for an additional 29 MW of community solar projects in the state. We are excited to be a part of these efforts to decarbonize New York and improve energy access for its residents. #communitysolar #EmpowerYourProject #solarenergy #EPCprojects
