About us
The Elk Grove Unified School District (EGUSD) is an award-winning district, known for its commitment to academic excellence and learning for all students. The district is the fifth largest school district in California and the largest in Northern California, serving more than 62,000 students representing 88 different languages spoken. The district has 67 schools (42 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, 9 high schools, 7 alternative schools including an adult education school) covering 320 square miles within the City of Elk Grove, the City of Sacramento, the City of Rancho Cordova and the unincorporated area of Sacramento County. The district’s rich history reaches beyond unification and into the 19th century. The elementary school district known as “Elk Grove” was formed in 1866 and is one of the oldest in the state of California. The Elk Grove Union High School District followed almost 30 years later, opening in 1893. The unification of the Elk Grove district took place in 1959. Why Do We Do What We Do? We strive to prepare our students to be college and career ready upon graduation by ensuring that every student is learning in every classroom in every subject every day.

During the summer of 2020, members of Student Equity Councils from different schools joined to form a chapter of GENup and identified two primary student advocacy goals: seat a student Board member on the Elk Grove Unified School District’s Board of Education and develop a Student Bill of Rights. Students researched Student Bill of Rights examples from other districts and began drafting an EGUSD version that was adopted by the Board on June 13, 2023. Throughout the 2023-24 school year, representatives from the Student Voice Committee and Student Equity Councils met with Student Board Member Isabella Sigal to make revisions to the Student Bill of Rights. EGUSD believes that a Student Bill of Rights promotes greater equity and responsibility on all school campuses, and further supports protection of the rights and liberties of all students regardless of their respective backgrounds. EGUSD students can utilize a Student Bill of Rights to advocate for themselves and others, and to engage school staff and students in conversation about how to improve their school experiences.

Elk Grove Unified recognizes June 19, 2024 as Juneteenth Independence Day. The State of California has designated Juneteenth Independence Day as a special day of observance in recognition of the emancipation of all enslaved people in the United States. Juneteenth Independence Day celebrations have been held to honor African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures and while taking time for reflection and rejoicing. The continued nationwide celebration of Juneteenth Independence Day provides an opportunity for the people of the United States to learn more about the past; to better understand and reckon with the experiences that have shaped the United States; and to recognize that the observance of the end of slavery is part of the history and heritage of the United States.
