AFRY and ELCH see a rising need for chemical & pharmaceutical producers to explore options under which the production in DE/EU can be sustained. Their competitive position in Germany/EU is under stress by the loss of a cheap natural gas (and crude oil) supply from Russia and the rise of electricity prices after the suppression of nuclear and coal-fired generation. However, a sustainable chemical-pharmaceutical industry requires extensive investments in an energy and production infrastructure that has aged over many decades, which on the one hand, does not pay off, and on the other hand, lacks new, green plant and process technology. An unclear or even excessive regulatory & political environment prevents investments from transforming energy and production infrastructure (decarbonisation costs/energy generation and production facilities). The situation is to exacerbate: Producers under BEGH and/or ETS II have to bear higher costs on CO2 prices, and from 2024 onwards, also for (hazardous) waste incineration, high Carbon Leakage protection/CBAM costs. Green hydrogen and other alternatives seem to be of minor economic attractiveness for heat and electricity generation, and storage. Under these circumstances, AFRY and ELCH put together their complementary skills in order to shape customised solutions, i.e. to assess product, production and site sustainability, to define and select decarbonisation options and to support realisation. With our joint, long-standing knowledge of chemical and pharmaceutical markets as well as sustainable energy solutions, we support our clients to assess how future-proof their products and production facilities are in DE/EU, if investments in decarbonised/green energy are an opportunity or a threat, and what should be done short-, mid- and longer term.
