The Nurse Extern Program provides an immersive experience into nursing professional practice at ECU Health where student nurses gain first-hand experience in and exposure to the knowledge, skills and relationships needed to develop as a professional nurse. The program provides student nurses with the opportunity to increase their clinical competence and apply classroom knowledge in the clinical practice environment.

Meet Cheryl Hooks, a family nurse practitioner who began her career as a cosmetologist and beauty salon owner before deciding to pivot and pursue a career in health care after a family member's health crisis. During this challenging period, Cheryl discovered her passion for advocating for individuals with health care needs, a commitment that led her to become a nurse.
