The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) Set Rule released in June 2023 contained significant changes impacting the biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG) industry. One of those important changes included Renewable Identification Number (RIN) apportionment between D3 and D5 RINs, allowing digesters to continue to generate D3 RINs through biogas or RNG from wastewater or manure, and further generate D5 RINs through any additional biogas or RNG produced from accepting and co-digesting food waste. This effectively allows digesters to capture D3 RIN revenue that was not previously possible. Read David Lindenmuth’s latest article published in Biomass Magazine on how project operators can leverage new opportunities to net higher revenue streams, considerations and financial implications for developers, why quality assurance and compliance is critical to assessing the economic benefits of RIN credits, and more. The European Union’s (EU) Clean Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a landmark regulatory framework aimed at curbing emissions embedded in imported goods, including steel. By 2026, it will require steel importers to fully measure, report, and pay for these GHG emissions, aligning with imported goods with the stringency of the EU’s climate policies. Read Urszula Szalkowska’s latest article published in the May/June 2024 issue of Steel Times International on why the steel and iron industries must prepare now for more rigorous emissions reporting in compliance with EU methodology to maintain competitiveness in the EU market.
