🌟 New Blog Post Alert! 🌟 📖 Sara Keen dives into a recent event jointly hosted by Interspecies Internet Internet and XPRIZE to discuss the criteria and frameworks for decoding animal communication. “...the workshop underscored that we are on the precipice of something big: more research focus, data, and technology are being directed towards animal communication than ever before. As we start to uncover more about our planet and its inhabitants, our understanding of other species will fundamentally change, enabling humans to reimagine our relationships with the natural world.” 🔗 Read the full post below. https://lnkd.in/dpj_-wag #AI #AnimalCommunication #BehavioralEcology #EthicsInAI #EarthSpeciesProject #Research

AI to advance our understanding of animal communication.
About us
Earth Species Project (ESP) is a non-profit research lab and impact organization focused on using artificial intelligence to advance our understanding of animal communication, and ultimately to decode non-human languages. We believe AI has the potential to transform the way we perceive the world around us, expanding the ability of human beings to learn from other species. Our hope is that this will make a significant contribution to altering human perspective on how we relate to the rest of nature.

Join us in welcoming two new members of the Earth Species team! 🎉 Brittany Solano joins us as our new Director of Communications, and David Robinson as our newest Senior AI Research Scientist. Brittany helps science-driven organizations tell their stories to the audiences that matter. She spent the last 10 years building high-performance marketing teams and running ambitious communications programs for hundreds of companies, venture capital firms, and nonprofits that operate at the intersection of science and impact. Her passion for storytelling and her commitment to amplifying the impact of science-driven initiatives make her the perfect fit for our team. David previously specialized in AI research and engineering within the medical field, most recently serving as the machine learning lead at a startup automating multimodal medical data analysis. Driven by a childhood dream to work with whales and dolphins, he published a language-audio foundation model for bioacoustics as an independent researcher, leading him to connect with ESP. We’re building the team that will unlock the secrets of animal communication. If you’re interested in getting involved, see our jobs below. https://lnkd.in/dcqye8pp

We were honored to be able to support the development of the Planetary Guardians brand, and to be able to demonstrate the power of listening to the planet and to our fellow species. Congratulations AKQA Bloom and all the team at Planetary Guardians. Excited to be on this journey with you! Sara Keen Katherine Zacarian Aza Raskin Brittany Solano
Congratulations to the incredible team at AKQA Bloom for winning a Silver Lion at Cannes for the design of the Planetary Guardians brand that uniquely “Listens to Earth” AKQA, alongside Aza Raskin and the team at the Earth Species Project, used AI to capture sounds from three natural systems – the Great Barrier Reef, the Amazon, and the sounds of the Arctic Tern, a bird that travels around 44,000 miles from pole to pole each year. The logos are more than intriguing visuals. They offer science in a uniquely creative format, becoming a tool that helps humanity be synchronised with the Earth. After all, our planet doesn’t need us to give it a voice; it needs us to listen. https://lnkd.in/g-g6iKtJ

Congratulations to Sara Keen for captivating her audience at the recent AI and the Ocean event at Spaulding Boat Works! It's wonderful to hear the power that natural intelligence has to engender awe and wonder. Here's hoping it can help us to listen, learn, and to change.
Public Speaking & Business Storytelling | Helping Climate Solutions orgs level up their leaders and teams' verbal communication skills so they can raise visibility, gain buy-in, and increase their impact.
From a beautiful soundscape of whale song, to a multi-dimensional language map, and then translation into human language – that's the goal, the dream, of Earth Species Project for whales and all non-human communication. Steeped in the scent of sea air, fish stew, and varnish at Spaulding Boat Works, I was captivated by Sara Keen's dive into the world of animal communication and AI language modeling and translation. "Could the future where we understand the birds and the whales really be on our horizon? What could that mean for how we (humans) would engage with our world?" I was awash in questions. I have to admit, most of the conversation around AI bores me. I find AI art tedious, AI writing as dull as catalog copy, and AI bar conversations as interesting as the blockchain bar conversations of 2019 But when Sara showed us the 3D AI language maps (simplified for our human perception) and explained how these tools might unlock and decode animal communication, I was awestruck. I sat up and listened. And two days later, I'm still thinking about it. That's the power of a unique story. It sticks with us. When you are telling a story - doesn't matter if it's to potential customers or your board - don't copy someone else. Aim to make people sit up, lean in, and listen. Be unique in a world of copycats and AI writers. A big thank you to Maria Finn and The Institute for Ecosystem Based Living for curating and hosting this event. #BusinessStorytelling #Storytelling #PublicSpeaking

Following the recent release of BirdAVES, ESP's Senior Research Scientist Masato Hagiwara wrote a blogpost to reflect on using the model to unlock new possibilities in the field of animal communication and conservation. Check out his blogpost here: https://lnkd.in/epniVsuV
🌟 Introducing BirdAVES: Our Latest Bird Sound Foundation Model 🌟 We are thrilled to announce the release of our latest series of self-supervised animal vocalization encoder (AVES) models, named BirdAVES, specifically scaled and trained for bird sounds. 🤖Foundation models like GPTs have played a pivotal role in the AI revolution over the past few years. ESP has been heavily investing in the development of foundation models, and we released the first-ever discriminative foundation model, AVES, for animal vocalization last year. Trained through self-supervision, AVES can encode a wide range of animal vocalizations, achieving significant performance gains in many bioacoustic datasets and tasks. 🦜In this iteration, we focused on bird vocalizations, as they are one of the best-studied and well-resourced types of animal vocalization in bioacoustics. Bird sounds have a wide range of ecological, behavioral, and conservation implications through behavioral studies, population monitoring, and habitat analysis. 🚀We significantly scaled up the training of AVES in terms of training data, model size, and compute power, as it has been shown that the scaling law of foundation models apply across many domains of machine learning. 📈The newly trained BirdAVES models have achieved over a 20% performance improvement on bird datasets and have shown enhanced performance across various other datasets as well. Huge congratulations to Senior Research Scientist Masato Hagiwara for this amazing progress! Check out our pretrained models here: https://lnkd.in/eDWBDYdJ
