NASA funds DigitalFish and Cornell University to create “Holodeck Technologies for XR" DigitalFish is excited to announce NASA has awarded our STTR Phase I proposal, joint with Cornell University: “OpenUSD + Interactivity for XR Experience Description” (USDI-XRED). In this collaboration, we build on proven crossover technology from Media & Entertainment (M&E) to meet NASA’s unique requirements for Extended Reality (XR). While NASA has a long history in XR for training, operations, engineering, collaboration and human-performance applications, existing COTS XR solutions are fragmented and incompatible, with numerous shortcomings that limit practical deployment. Developed jointly with Cornell’s Design and Augmented Intelligence Lab (DAIL) under Dr. Saleh Kalantari and with guidance from Dr. Donald Greenberg (Cornell Program of Computer Graphics), USDI-XRED will extend Open Universal Scene Description (OpenUSD) with new schemas supporting enterprise-XR interactivity and interchange, including: • Rich, stateful object behaviors defined in a node-based behavior graph.  • Standardized XR user-interface elements with a declarative cross-platform description.  • Spatial anchors to reference scene elements to physical space or to the viewport HUD. • Text primitives for instructional information and mission telemetry. In addition, we will create validators to certify an OpenUSD scene exploiting these schemas is compliant with the capability requirements for a given XR mission application. USDI-XRED is a novel representation for interactive XR, built on industry-accepted OpenUSD, and able to support a wide range of applications and devices. We have committed to open-sourcing these innovations, and through our involvement with the Alliance for OpenUSD (AOUSD) we hope to build consensus for future submission to OpenUSD. NASA’s proposal solicitation, “Holodeck Technologies for XR,” showcases the breadth of the need: "One particularly notable technology from Star Trek was the holodeck, which served multiple purposes. It functioned as a data analysis environment, a planning tool, offering 3D visualization of data, models, and simulations. The holodeck was also used as a training environment, providing crew members with simulated environments for training. It also served as an engineering design tool, allowing crew members to create and manipulate 3D models of objects and systems piece by piece before their fabrication. Furthermore, it provided a recreational environment, simulating various locations for crew members to visit.” At DigitalFish, we know “content is king” applies beyond M&E, and even beyond Earth. NASA’s big vision for XR advancing space exploration will be built on scalable, reusable content, on top of open standards. We’re thrilled to be able to contribute to this mission.
