About us
The University of Texas at Austin Department of Computer Science (UTCS) is ranked as a top-ten Computer Science department nationally and is the only top-ten computer science department within 1,000 miles of Austin, TX. The department officially opened its doors on September 1, 1966. At that time it was strictly a graduate program consisting of 44 students, 13 faculty members, and an administrative staff of one. As the plural term implies, the new department was designed to bring together computer scientists previously identified with several different academic fields. When the popularity of computer-related studies began to soar in the mid-1970s, the need for a coordinated undergraduate computer science program was evident. The undergraduate program became a reality in September 1974 with 350 undergraduate computer science majors.

Happy LGBTQ+ Pride Month! Please join us in celebrating the rich histories and commemorating the many achievements and significant contributions made by people of the LGBTQ+ community to the field of computer science. 1. Edith Windsor worked at IBM for 16 years and achieved the highest technical position at the time, Senior Systems Programmer. Praised especially for her “top-notch debugging skills,” Windsor founded the consulting firm PC Classics after leaving IBM, where she made a point to provide tech educations for queer groups. She is alsowell-known as the queer rights activist whose victory in the landmark Supreme Court case United States v. Windsor helped overturn DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act). 2. Alan Turing conceptualized a universal machine capable of interpreting and executing instructions. This "Turing machine," as it became known, is the precursor to modern digital computers. Turing served as a cryptanalyst during World War II, where he designed and built the Bombe, a code-breaking device. The Bombe's remarkable ability to crack the supposedly unbreakable German codes is credited by historians with shortening the war by up to four years 3. Irma L. Olguin Jr., CEO and cofounder of Bitwise Industries, works to unlock potential in "underdog" cities across the U.S. In 2010, she launched 59DaysOfCode, a software development competition to boost the Central Valley’s tech scene. She also co-founded Hashtag, a collaborative workspace for tech professionals. In 2012, Olguin founded Bitwise Industries to enhance Fresno's tech industry. In 2021, she was recognized in Fast Company's Queer 50 list for her influence and innovation in business and tech. 4. Christopher Strachey's career began as a physicist and teacher, and then later transitioned into computer programming, where he made a name for himself by blending computer science and art. Strachey is remembered as one of the developers of Combined Programming Language (CPL), an early precursor to the influential C programming language
