Denver Health's Federico F. Peña Southwest Family Health Center has partnered with Re:Vision (Denver, CO) for the past three years to address food insecurity and promote healthy eating habits and lifestyles for children and adults living in Southwest Denver. Food is medicine, and without access to nourishing fruits and vegetables, patients are at higher risk of developing medical problems like obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. The Denver Health Med-Peds team including doctors Julie Venci, Carolina Gutierrez and resident Kathryn Hawrot lead a “produce prescription” project that gives eligible patients a box of fresh fruits and vegetables grown locally by Re:Vision weekly for three months at our Southwest Family Health Center. Last month, our clinic team members, including providers, handed out 80 produce prescriptions to patients and families! Working with our local business partners to make healthy foods accessible to those who need it most is just another way we are creating positive and impactful change in our communities. #DHSpotlight #WeApplaud #DHCommunity #HealthyEating #FHC #FoodIsMedicine #HealthyFood #Nutrition #HealthEquity #DHPediatrics 🥕🥔🍅🥦🍊

Denver Health's Lowry Family Health Center was excited to host Governor Jared Polis and Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Executive Director Jill Ryan today who discussed the importance of Practice-Based Healthcare Education grants, one of which the Family Health Center was awarded for its Colorado Works for International Physicians (COWIP) program. COWIP is a unique partnership between the Spring Institute for Intercultural Learning and Denver Health dedicated to empowering current Colorado residents who have graduated from international medical schools with MD-equivalent degrees to excel in primary care residency programs and obtain their medical license to practice in the U.S. Launched in January of this year, COWIP is only the second program of its type in the country and has allowed participants Sulafa Elhassan (third photo pictured left) and Suhaila Obaidalla (third photo pictured right) to advance their careers in the medical field. Sulafa went to medical school in Sudan and practiced medicine both in Sudan and Saudi Arabia before moving to the U.S. in 2015. Suhaila went to medical school in Russia and practiced medicine in Sudan before moving to Denver in 2009. She said she’s “looking forward to give back to Colorado and to work hard to make the medical system better.” Learn more about COWIP at den.health/COWIP. #DHSpotlight #DHCommunity #DHGrowth #FHC #WeApplaud 🌍👏

It may be July, but we are already working to build the largest walking team at this year’s Susan G. Komen More Than Pink Walk in October! Last year, about 100 people signed up to walk with us in the fundraiser to end breast cancer. We are hoping to break that record this year. Join Denver Health’s Breast Imaging, Breast Surgery and Breast Oncology teams in signing up to walk three miles on Saturday, October 12, at Civic Center Park in Denver. A limited number of Denver Health T-shirts will be available for those who sign up to walk on our team, first come, first served. There is a link on the Komen page under the “our story” section with information on how to reserve your shirt size. Sign up at den.health/MoreThanPink. 🩷 #TeamDenverHealth #DHMammogram #Mammogram #BreastCancer #MoreThanPink #KomenWalk #EndBreastCancer

Denver Health has partnered with the Denver Housing Authority (DHA) to build single-room occupancy units on the hospital’s campus which give unhoused patients just released from the hospital the opportunity to rest, heal and be supported while working toward securing more permanent housing. Through the Transitional Housing Program, Denver Health can address the often-complicated issues of healing patients face after hospitalization and work through multiple partnerships to help patients move toward stable, secure and longer-term housing. Taylor Sun, Denver Health social worker, and Sarah Stella, MD, hospitalist, call the Transitional Housing Program a “game changer.” It provides a stable transitional home for patient-residents — a unit of their own — while they work through the process of obtaining long-term housing. At-risk Intervention and Mentoring (AIM) Medical Director Dr. Benjamin Li, participated in last week’s Doctors for America White Coat event in collaboration with the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The event was held in Washington, D.C, bringing together 80 medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and emergency responders, to address the urgent public health crisis of gun violence. Discussions centered on the traumatic impact witnessed by health care professionals, and the necessity of implementing evidence-based practices to mitigate the crisis. Dr. Li emphasized the vital role of health care providers in advocating for comprehensive solutions and the continued need for resources to support initiatives like hospital-based violence intervention programs, such as the AIM program at Denver Health. Dr. Li recently secured a grant from the State of Colorado's Crime Victim Services, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Grant Program for AIM in 2025. The grant will provide essential salary support for AIM's outreach workers, facilitating services such as trauma-informed and culturally responsive bedside interventions and case management for victims of gun violence, stabbings and assaults. “This is a public health crisis requiring solutions from across the health care sector, in partnership with the community,” said Dr. Li. 🧡 #GunViolenceAwarenessMonth #WearOrange #GunViolence #DisarmHate #EndGunViolence #CultureofCARE #FirearmSafety #HAVhope #WeApplaud #DHExperts

Denver Health made a meaningful impact at the Special Olympics Colorado Summer Games in Grand Junction last weekend. Volunteers from Denver Health dedicated their time to supporting athletes and raising awareness about our comprehensive services within the Special Olympics community. With a focus on holistic care, volunteers conducted medical, mental health and dental screenings while providing education and health promotion to more than 200 athletes and their families. Thank you to Nick Gagner, Dental Director of our Westside Family Health Center, and Sharif Abdelhamid, Patient Experience Director, for organizing this effort and helping to make a difference in the lives of these athletes and their families! 💙 #DHSpotlight #SpecialOlympics #SOColorado #StateSummerGames #HealthEquity #DHCommunity

Last week former U.S. House of Representative Patrick J. Kennedy, son of the late Senator Ted Kennedy, visited Denver Health's inpatient and outpatient behavioral health clinics including the Center for Addiction Medicine (CAM) and our new CAM Academy training facility. He spoke with department leaders and teams about how to better advocate for and fund mental health and substance use treatment initiatives. While in Congress, he was the lead author of the landmark Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (Federal Parity Law), which requires insurers to cover treatment for mental health and substance use disorders no more restrictively than treatment for illnesses of the body. His new book, “Profiles in Mental Health Courage,” offers an inside look at how ordinary people struggle with mental health and addiction. “The work that Denver Health is doing is extraordinary,” Kennedy said. “I’m so impressed by how comprehensive your services are and the systems-based approach you offer when it comes to behavioral health.” #DHSpotlight #MentalHealthAwareness #CAMAcademy #WordsMatter #SubstanceUseDisorder #TraumaResponsive #BehavioralHealth #AddictionMedicine #DHCommunity Public Health Institute at Denver Health The Kennedy Forum
