Dena Upton (Head of People, Dandy) has a set of values she looks for when considering a new People Leader role. Here are her top five: 1️⃣ Strong values: These must be deeply embedded within the organization. Founders should clearly express them, like DC and Elias did at Drift and Tony and Dan did at Dandy. 2️⃣ Decisiveness, speed, and vision: She wants leaders who make quick, informed decisions. 3️⃣ Prepared for a "no": A relationship based on mutual trust and respect, where founders can handle a "no." 4️⃣ Fearlessness in facing the truth: Leaders must be data-driven and rigorous in their approach. 5️⃣ Servant leadership: "Carrying the water" is crucial. We wanted to make sure everyone had an equitable and consistent experience with the organization.” Dena Upton, Chief People Officer at Dandy (formerly at Drift), shares why her company implemented digital-first principles to ensure remote work equity—where no employees were treated like second-class citizens based on their work location. “You start to look at the data over time. Are you promoting people faster who are right near our conversation spaces or our Hub locations? Are you promoting people that are remote workers just as quickly?
