With the increasingly rapid growth of AI, how do we ensure the benefits of AI outweigh its risks? Salesforce's Climate and AI Summit during #SFCW gathered #ecopreneurs Cully Cavness co-founder, COO, and President of Crusoe; Areeb Malik, co-founder of Glacier; and Kate Kallot, founder and CEO of Amini to discuss ways to scale sustainable AI models and infrastructure, and how they're leveraging AI for climate action. Thank you to Claudine Emeott for moderating and Salesforce for inviting us to discuss the importance of responsible AI. #AI #ClimateAction #Sustainability #TechForGood Missed the discussion? Crusoe is aligning the future of computation with the future of our climate.
About us
Crusoe exists to bring energy to ideas. We are the pioneers of clean computing infrastructure that reduces both the costs and the environmental impact of the world’s expanding digital economy. By unlocking stranded sources of energy to power cloud and data center services, we are creating the climate-aligned future of compute-intensive innovation that reduces rather than adds to emissions. The world’s appetite for computation, energy, and progress will never stop growing. Crusoe is here to bring energy to ideas in ways that are aligned with the needs of our climate.

“I’m looking for the next Peter Reinhart,” Lowercarbon Capital partner Shawn Xu told Latitude Media at a 24-hour hackathon in late June hosted by OpenAI, cloud platform Crusoe, and Lowercarbon. Reinhart, the Segment founder who later sold his customer data platform to Twilio before founding carbon removal company Charm Industrial, was the winner of the first hackathon Xu ever organized a decade ago, in what Xu described as the “hackathon heyday.” Maeve Allsup offers a look inside the event: https://lnkd.in/eVkWB-Ds

Last weekend, we unleashed 100+ of the brightest minds passionate about climate tech to solve seriously hairy energy problems. Fueled by caffeine and armed with mad skills in software and AI, these engineers, designers, product gurus, and founders built mind-blowing projects in just 24 hours. Kudos to the winning teams, who crushed the real-world problems posed by Crux, Eli Technologies, and in energy permitting (enabled by NEPTEC1.0, the AI-ready dataset of 28,000+ EIS documents from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)): •🥇 Verdigris: These folks are playing matchmaker between banks and homeowners, using Eli's API and some LLMs to get more clean energy upgrades into low and moderate-income homes. •🥈 Daylight: Want to know who's holding the keys to your clean energy project permit? This team used NEPTEC1.0 to shine a light on exactly who you need to influence. •🥉 Honorable Mention went to Carbon Connect, who cooked up a tool that spits out synthetic tax credit data and sniffs out the perfect corporate buyers for clean energy credits. This team of (mostly) ex-Applied Intuitioners showing up strong. Turns out world-class software skills transfer well to climate tech. A big thank you to our co-hosts Crusoe and OpenAI, and our exceptional panel of judges: Chase Lochmiller (Crusoe), Jonathan Reiber (OpenAI), Vanessa Ching (NVIDIA), Jane Woodward (Stanford University, WovenEarth Ventures), and Shawn Xu (Lowercarbon Capital). Shoutout also to the amazing talks given by folks from the DOE, PNLL, and climate tech founders and leaders from Crux, Eli Technologies, Terra AI, Myst AI (acquired by Snowflake), Blumen, Halcyon, Paces, Spark (YC W24), and Pioneer. What a lineup! Me, Shawn, Elena Mosse, and rest of the Lowercarbon Capital crew are pumped to see more folks jump into the climate <> AI arena. Because let's face it, saving the planet should be this much fun. #hackathon #ai #energy

Hackathon Recap! ⚡💻 Over an inspiring 24 hours, 100 engineers, designers, and product leaders came together to tackle the federal permitting process, a major hurdle in the deployment of clean energy. With invaluable data and a permitting workshop from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and insightful prompts from Crux and Eli Technologies, teams worked tirelessly to develop groundbreaking AI solutions to our biggest energy challenges. The hackathon culminated in a thrilling demo day, where teams pitched their solutions to judges from NVIDIA and California Government Operations Agency, plus top venture capitalists, engineering leaders, and policymakers. Congratulations to the winning teams Verdigris and Daylight! • 1st Place: Verdigris – Pinpointed the best LMI homes to greenify for immediate carbon reduction • 2nd Place: Daylight – Used AI to map the relationships between stakeholders for thousands of historic projects to streamline permitting processes for developers • Special shoutout to the CarbonConnect team for tackling both prompts, and all teams who made it to the final round We’re so proud to be part of this event, which truly embodies Crusoe’s mission to align the future of computing with the future of the climate. Thank you to our co-hosts Lowercarbon Capital and OpenAI and to everyone who participated, mentored, and supported this hackathon. #CleanEnergy #AI #Hackathon #ClimateTech #TechForGood

Our 24-hour Hackathon for Clean Energy with Lowercarbon Capital and OpenAI is underway and the energy here is electric. Our hacker teams have been hard at work to develop AI solutions aimed at overcoming one of the biggest clean energy deployment barriers – the federal permitting process. With never-before-seen data and a permitting workshop from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and expert guidance from mentors at the DOE, NVIDIA, California Government Operations Agency, Crux, Eli Technologies, and more, our hackers are harnessing AI to push the energy transition forward. Stay tuned for more updates as we gear up for the demo day showcase! 🚀 #CleanEnergy #AI #Hackathon #ClimateTech #TechForGood

We’ve got some exciting plans this weekend…hosting a 24-hour Hackathon for Clean Energy with Lowercarbon Capital and partners OpenAI NVIDIA Crux Eli Technologies U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) This Friday and Saturday, we’ll welcome 100 engineers, designers & product leaders to our San Francisco HQ to develop AI solutions aimed at accelerating the deployment of clean energy across the U.S. The hackers will have 24 hours to tackle one of the biggest challenges in clean energy: the federal permitting process. As demand for electricity soars, countless projects are being delayed due to inefficiencies like interconnection bottlenecks, tax credit management, and homeowner education on electrification. And for the first time, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will share a new data set from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, providing invaluable insights for our hackers. Additionally, prompts from Crux and Eli Technologies will focus on simplifying tax credit monetization and accessing incentives for home electrification. Hackers will have the chance to pitch their solutions to judges from NVIDIA and California Government Operations Agency, plus top VCs, engineering leaders, and policymakers. I recently had the chance to speak to a team from Crusoe and Gradient on their effort to create an open LLM with a one-million-token context window. Some of the key takeaways: 1- Open research is vital to advances in AI: The team built on the research, techniques, models and code published by researchers across the world, including BAIR (distributed attention), Meta (Llama-3), Nvidia (RULER), as well as universities in China and Singapore. 2- You don't necessarily need the most expensive GPUs to conduct cutting-edge research: The team was able to train their models, Llama-3 8B and 70B, on a cluster of L40S GPUs at a fraction of the cost of higher-end GPUs. This was made possible as the Crusoe and Gradient team worked closely on adjusting the GPU cluster for the specific kind of computations that were required. 3- Long-context LLMs unlock new applications and opportunities that previously required extensive technical efforts through fine-tuning and RAG. Thanks to Leonid Pekelis, Ethan Petersen, and Patrick McGregor for sharing their experience. https://lnkd.in/grjR5Uxe
