We had an incredible time at Craig Hospital's fourth annual Rec at the Res! ☀️ Our amazing recreational therapists and interdisciplinary staff took 46 Craig inpatients to Cherry Creek State Park for a day of adaptive fun, including biking, fishing, kayaking, cycling, boating and hiking. This event isn't just about having fun—it's about empowering our patients and their caregivers to develop skills and work toward their recreation and rehabilitation goals. And yes, having fun along the way is a huge bonus! This year, we also hosted a hospital-wide block party to celebrate the summer with the Craig community. A big thank you to our staff and volunteers for making it happen! #RecAtTheRes #CraigHospital #TherapeuticRecreation #RecreationalTherapy

After 40 years in neurorehabilitation, including a decade as Craig Hospital’s workers’ compensation manager, Perry Ann Williams has announced her retirement this August. “Retirement is bittersweet,” Perry Ann reflects, expressing gratitude to those she's worked with over the years. Stepping into Perry Ann’s role will be Tracey Jensen, a certified brain injury specialist with 25+ years of experience in workers’ compensation and neurorehabilitation who has been a part of the Craig Hospital Provider Relations team since 2019. As Perry Ann retires, she shares some imparting wisdom: "Don’t sweat the small stuff. Count your blessings. Life after a catastrophic injury is a marathon, not a sprint. Do your homework on finding specialty care for your health care needs. It’s a complicated health care world. Thank you all for the lives you help rebuild and for teaching others to live successfully with ‘a new normal.’” We’re also thrilled to welcome Rene' Mills MS CCC-SLP, CBIST to the Provider Relations team during this transition! Rene, a speech-language pathologist with more than 30 years of experience, will be an incredible addition to our Craig team. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gXtS_wZe

Last week, we celebrated our incredible Craig team members who reached milestone years of service. We enjoyed seeing our staff, volunteers, patients and their families as they stopped by to pick up sweet treats and leave notes for staff celebrating 5, 10, 15 and 20+ years at Craig. All together, these years of service total over 1,600 years! More than 230 recognition cards with thoughtful messages honoring these staff were filled out by the Craig community this year! A big thank you to our amazing staff for their contributions to Craig's culture and legacy 💙

Happy #NationalVideoGameDay! 🎮 With the help of Craig therapists and The AbleGamers Foundation, #CraigGrad Adam was equipped with a custom gaming setup tailored to his needs. In his home state of Minnesota, Adam was an avid hunter and enjoyed biking and playing team sports. But after his accident in 2016, Adam realized that these activities would no longer look the same for him. “And that’s why I turned to video gaming,” Adam shares. “I have played video games my entire life. After my accident, gaming provided a great escape from the harsh reality of my disability. On top of having fun, I’ve also realized that playing these games provides a form of physical therapy because I need to hold and move my arms in a specific way as I press the buttons. As a result, the dexterity in my hands and arms has improved. Over time, I’ve also been able to strengthen my arms, as well as improve my coordination and sitting balance. And I was able to directly carry over these improvements to driving my adaptive van with hand controls.” Learn more about Adam's story and the power of #AdaptiveGaming: https://lnkd.in/gKWW8ewt

Two weeks after graduating from San Diego State University in May 2023, Tanner's celebratory trip to Mexico ended when the ATV he was in flipped over, resulting in a T10 complete spinal cord injury. “I felt extremely lucky to be at Craig, but it was a difficult time for me,” Tanner shares. “I had to get used to my new body and my new life, which was a very emotional experience.” At Craig, Tanner discovered an adaptive all-terrain mobility vehicle designed for golfers. “Golf was an activity I could still play,” he says. With a grant from the Stand Up and Play Foundation, Tanner got his own VertaCat and now plays regularly. Tanner’s passion for golf led him to be a guest speaker at this year’s Sanctuary Golf Tournament coming this July. This event, celebrating its 27th year, has raised over $5 million for the Craig Foundation’s assistance funds and programs! Learn more about Tanner's journey: https://lnkd.in/gMtr9QmT

Last week, we celebrated our incredible volunteers at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner! A simple "thank you" is never enough, so we gathered with food and fun to show our gratitude for all our dedicated volunteers. “The contributions of our volunteers help make Craig Hospital a world-class neurorehabilitation hospital,” Craig Director of Volunteers Jill Stelley Virden says. “The hope, help and inspiration that our volunteers share with our patients, families and staff is immeasurable. We consider our volunteers among our greatest gifts.” Our sincere gratitude to Abby Copilevitz, Craig volunteer assistant, for organizing another wonderful volunteer dinner this year!
