CSH and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs (DCA) are excited to announce the FIRST Georgia Supportive Housing Institute! The partnership between DCA and CSH will allow communities and stakeholders to build capacity and knowledge to create housing for residents with supportive service needs. Georgia joins 15 other states that have used the Institute to advance supportive housing in their communities. Supportive housing combines affordable housing with quality services that help people with additional needs to live with stability, autonomy, and dignity. Applications will open in early August 2024 for interested groups to take part in a five-month training series to deepen their expertise on the process of developing and operating supportive housing. The application will be open to affordable housing developers, property managers, service providers, and other interested stakeholders. For more information, visit https://hubs.la/Q02G7lFx0

Do you believe people choose to be homeless? Read Julie's personal story on how a San Diego socialite and philanthropist found herself without a home, then tell us again why you think people choose homelessness. Opinion: I never imagined I could become homeless. Here’s how I coped. https://hubs.la/Q02FPYgj0 #rootcauses #housingnothandcuffs

In light of the unconscionable SCOTUS ruling, those wanting to make homelessness a crime ignore why people become homeless in the first place. Read this article about an eviction crisis in Oklahoma. Arresting people with no place to go after an eviction isn't going to solve homelessness. Last week’s Supreme Court ruling in #JohnsonvGrantsPass overturned constitutional protections for people experiencing #homelessness - exposing them to fines, arrests, and incarceration. Tell Congress to take action by investing in HUD programs that provide critical #housing resources. Send your letter to Congress before the budget vote on July 10th: https://hubs.la/Q02Ftzrh0

Thank you for the CSH, the Source for Housing Solutions Anniversary wishes 🎉 July 2019 is when my relationship with them began when I started receiving coaching through their Speak Up! advocacy program in Los Angeles. CSH sent me to my first NAEH conference July 2019. It was here that I understood homelessness was a national issue. My mind was blown! 🤯 Pamela Crenshaw was my roommate who woke up at 5am for a few days to curl her hair 🤣. I learned how cute she was/is. Thank you Ann English for introducing me to CSH. I met Ann at Downtown Women's Center with Amy Turk, LCSW, and Pamela in February 2019 in the first DVHSC Advocates cohort. Happy 5th Anniversary to me as an advocate with CSH and with the Domestic Violence and Homeless Services Coalition! 💜💜💜 #Advocacy #Storytelling #LivedExperienceMovement #LivedExperience #BringYourHeartToWork❤️

Really proud of NYC City Council and our community organizer leadership that are showing the rest of the nation how we end homelessness -- in this moment of darkness and disappointment with the Grants Pass Supreme Court decision. NYC City Council has given $6.4M of its discretionary funding to ensure the ONLY supportive housing program dedicated for people leaving Rikers Island Jail has parity in funding to similar City programs. Lauren Velez, Emma Cathell, MSW and I look forward to working with City agency leadership to ensure this funding is rolled out to meet the 2019 Points of Agreement to close Rikers Island. This budget victory simply wouldn't have happened if not for the incredible advocacy of Sarita Daftary-Steel and Darren Mack at Freedom Agenda and other community organizers. To my fellow NYC voters, we have a commonsense roadmap (see link in the comments) to close Rikers and a vision to turn this Jail into a Renewable Energy Island. We need accountability by City Leadership in investments and construction timelines for the borough-based jails. Ask your Council member what they are doing to make sure these are top priorities -- the $6.4M for Justice Involved Supportive Housing (JISH) is a big win, but we need expanded investments in alternatives to incarceration, mental health resources (over HALF of people at Rikers have mental health needs), and a clear pathway for NYC DOC Correctional Officers to find other City jobs as we make good on this promise to close this jail. Let's keep paying attention and making noise. CSH, the Source for Housing Solutions
NYC City Council passed the 2025 budget, allocating $6.4M to fund 500 Justice Involved Supportive Housing (JISH) units for individuals leaving Rikers. This fulfills a 2019 commitment from city officials and was championed by CSH alongside City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, Council Members Sandy Nurse and Carlina Rivera, Freedom Agenda, Vera Institute of Justice, The Fortune Society, and other partners. CSH Sr. Program Manager, Emma Cathell, spoke about JISH at a Close Rikers Rally earlier this year. (Photo credit: Tashan Rivers, WCJA.) Learn more: https://hubs.la/Q02Fj-wc0

We know tickets and fines will not solve this country's rising homelessness crisis. CSH offers data-driven solutions to shift resources from temporary fixes to lasting results. There is still opportunity to prioritize affordable housing and support services. If you're looking for a better way forward, visit https://hubs.ly/Q02Ft02h0

In light of the deplorable #SCOTUS ruling last week, Joyce Tavon with Massachusetts Housing & Shelter Alliance writes about what MA has done and should continue to do to solve homelessness. Hint: it's not ticketing or arresting people for trying to survive. https://hubs.la/Q02Fk9gW0
