🧘♂️ Many schools, teachers and counselors use the summer to reflect, refresh and reevaluate. Professional Development opportunities can be one way to do this! Consider a change of scenery 🏞️ (after all, it is the summer time ☀️💁🏼♀️) for professional development conferences, webinars, or chats. Don't forget some R&R while you're at it.

💡 Most of us have heard of “college undermatching”, a phenomenon in which highly-qualified students don’t apply to or attend selective postsecondary institutions for which they are academically qualified, but have you heard of “career undermatching”? It’s when students have earned degrees and pursue jobs that don’t require that particular degree. 🕵️ There are undoubtedly a variety of reasons why recent college graduates would choose a job for which they are overqualified. As secondary school counselors and advisors, we can ensure that students are aware of the variety of postsecondary credentialing that exists as a way to help them determine the type of credentialing that is required for the job or career they hope or expect to achieve.

A Director of Career Services at an elite university once shared with us that research shows that students often pursue careers based on what they see at home and in their immediate communities, and it’s important for career advisors to help students explore and experience a wide range of opportunities. There’s something out there for everyone, and it is possible to do what you’re good at and what you love - you just have to search for it, prepare for it, and plan for it. Let us help.

As the graduating seniors 🎓 transition out, this might be a good time to encourage your juniors to begin making plans -- plans for the summer, plans for next semester, and plans to find their postsecondary pathways. You can use the Postsecondary Pathways microcourse as a tool to find the right fit for your students and advisees, including those that might not include or require a bachelor’s degree 📜. In the microcourse, you can also find some great resources including our Postsecondary Pathways Powerpoint & Handout, Postsecondary Pathways Lesson Plan, and our Advising in Action videos 🎥 with Vincent, one of our Contigo Ed Creators!
