ICYMI: Slack has been taking a lot of heat around its use of customer data for AI training. TLDR for you: Context: - Slack is using customer data to train some of its AI services - Users (including company workspaces) are automatically opted in to share their data with Slack for the use of certain AI training - In order to opt out of this, workspace owners have to reach out and email Slack (see how below) Top 3 Takeaways: 1. Non-Generative AI is not the same as Generative AI: Slack has indicated that the auto-opt-in data sharing for AI training is limited to global model training for non-generative AI features (such as emoji recommendations). The important point here is that non-generative AI doesn't have the same risk of exposing inputs (e.g., your customer data) back to the consumer of the non-generative AI. The risks with generative AI are much higher because it is non-deterministic, which means it can produce different outputs when given the same inputs, so there is less control around the security of confidential data (think about it like this: you can talk to generative AI such as ChatGPT and it will offer varied answers to the same question, but you can't 'talk' to non-generative AI). 2. Messaging is so important if you're trying to build trust: AI companies, take note. The original AI privacy language Slack had on its website was difficult to understand - and it led to a huge amount of confusion and a pretty rough weekend for their PR team. We've been monitoring Slack's online privacy language for the last 48+ hours and they have changed it multiple times. Easy-to-understand, plain, and direct messaging around AI privacy is incredibly important to build trust with customers in today's world. 3. You must email Slack to opt out of auto-sharing data: To opt out of automatically sharing workspace data with Slack for their global models, email feedback@slack.com with the subject line “Slack global model opt-out request”, and your workspace/org URL information in the body (unfortunately, Slack does not provide a timeline to expect confirmation).
