Sometimes, our impostor syndrome kicks in, and we fail to connect the dots of skills and experiences we have outside a professional setting, even though they can bring a lot of value to the position we're aiming for. When transitioning from product manager to project manager, I knew I lacked experience in budget management 💰. I was worried, so I decided to prepare. I looked for areas outside of work where I had to manage a budget, and, as you can guess, adulting provided a few examples—after all, managing a household budget is a monthly necessity 😅. With this in mind, I listed different scenarios where I had to make tough decisions and handle challenging budget situations. This exercise boosted my confidence for the interviews. In the end, I got the job at Classy Llama, and for the past few months, I have been working closely with budgets, learning from amazing people such as Jenni Virtue, and fine-tuning that hard skill every day. The lesson I want to share is this: remember that volunteering, hobbies, side projects, and even personal challenges/experiences can showcase your adaptability, leadership, problem-solving, and creativity. When preparing for an interview or updating your CV, take a moment to reflect on these experiences. How did they help you grow? What skills did you develop? How do they align with the job description? Don't underestimate the value of your unique journey.
