As part of a citywide effort to make public facilities physically accessible and welcoming to people with disabilities, Seattle Parks and Recreation strives to incorporate compliance with standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in every capital project. We are also working hard to remove existing barriers throughout our parks and recreation system. With Park District funding, we estimate that we can remove an average of 175 accessibility barriers annually, and we are thrilled to report that in 2023 we surpassed that number and actually resolved 265 accessibility barriers! #HealthyPeople https://lnkd.in/g4ceWMF7
Mayor Harrell and Council President Nelson Propose New Curbside Designation for Live Music Venues to Support Easier Parking, Loading Access Today, Mayor Bruce Harrell and Council President Sara Nelson announced legislation to establish a new curbside designation and permit program for live music venues to make loading and parking more accessible to musicians and supporting crews. “Seattle’s world-class music scene is a not only an essential part of our cultural identity, but also our economy by supporting so many businesses and creative workers,” said Mayor Harrell. “Our local performers and live music venues are a tremendous asset, and they shouldn’t have to put their livelihoods at risk from damage or theft to perform. These new music venue zones will allow for safer, easier transport of gear and equipment, showing one of the ways we are working to support a thriving arts and culture landscape in our city.” https://lnkd.in/gC5er_hq

Our Drainage and Wastewater crews recently worked to clean Pump Station 35 in University Village. Located near major grocery stores, businesses, and high-density residential buildings, the pump station often faces complications due to an increased accumulation of debris, fats, oils, and greases. Crews must manually break up the hardened sediment using hand tools, pressure washers, and vacuum trucks to prevent the blockage from creating wastewater disruptions in the surrounding community. It is labor-intensive, odorous, and dirty work, and a fine example of the vital role SPU employees perform every day to keep Seattle healthy and running smoothly.

The Metropolitan Improvement District (MID) ambassadors are the heart and soul of the work to make Downtown clean, safe, and welcoming to every resident, worker, and visitor. Their neon yellow jackets and warm smiles are always a friendly site in Downtown neighborhoods, with their area of service including Belltown, the Denny Regrade, the Retail Core, Pioneer Square, the Waterfront, and West Edge. Last year as part of Mayor Harrell’s Downtown Activation Plan, legislation adopted by a unanimous vote renewed the MID program for another 10 years and expanded their zone to include more areas of South Downtown. One of the services that MID ambassadors provide is a SafeWalk service, to accompany people as they walk Downtown. According to the Downtown Seattle Association Downtown Revitalization Dashboard for May 2024, MID ambassadors helped 424 people get quickly and confidently to their destination. Hit that celebrate button to give Nicole and other MID ambassadors a little online applause! Since joining the DSA/MID nearly a year ago, Nicole has approached her job with a total team mindset, and in February she was promoted to assistant supervisor. She has broadened her skills and become an integral part of an internal professional development program designed to further employee skills. Nicole always has a great attitude and a strong willingness to help wherever possible, including recently stepping in to help with a medical emergency downtown. Please join us in congratulating Nicole as our May Ambassador of the Month.
