Interim Chief Heather Morris has decided not to pursue the permanent police chief position at the Aurora Police Department. Pasted below is the message she disseminated to department employees earlier today. The city posted the police chief position on Monday, July 8. A recruitment process is underway. Pursuant to the city charter, the city manager is responsible for selecting a police chief and seeking approval from a majority of the City Council. City Manager Jason Batchelor will share more details once the process is further along and will not comment further at this time. — APD Team, As many of you may have seen, the Chief of Police position was posted on the city website on Monday. The posting will close today at 5 pm. After thoughtful consideration, I have made the personal decision not to apply for the position. It has been a privilege to serve the men and women of the Aurora Police Department first as the Interim Deputy Chief and for the last 6 months as the Interim Chief of Police. I will remain as the Interim Chief until such time as the next Chief of Police of the Aurora Police Department is sworn in. As the process continues and I have more details and I am able, I will share them with the department. I am proud of the work our members have accomplished over the last 15 months since I have been a part of this organization. I am excited about the future as well because I know that we will continue to build on our successes, and we will finally have a permanent Chief! This has been a long journey, and I want to thank all of you for your spirit and commitment to serving our community. Keep doing the great work you are doing every day!
