David Atmaram Satterwhite, CEO of Chronus, shared his insights with CNBC regarding the latest 'coffee badging' trend and how companies can engage their workers on a deeper level. “Employees have become accustomed to the flexibility of working from home and may only come to the office when absolutely necessary,” said David Satterwhite, CEO of Chronus, a software firm focused on improving employee engagement. “It’s just too hard to put that genie back in the bottle.” “The issue isn’t just about employees badging in and out; it’s about what drives this lack of motivation and interest,” Satterwhite said. Research shows that employees are more engaged when they have opportunities for development, learning, mentorship and career pathing, he noted. “Without these, ‘coffee badging’ is just a symptom of a deeper problem.”

Our CEO, David Satterwhite, was recently featured in Employee Benefit News discussing the power of mentoring programs in the workplace, how to measure their outcomes and the benefits of using technology to reduce the administrative burden. "Organizations only reach their full potential when their people do," says David Satterwhite, CEO of mentoring software company Chronus. "Mentoring is one of the best ways to attack both lack of developing people and lack of connection." The commitment of leadership to mentoring programs is also a primary part of what makes them successful, Satterwhite says. He cites examples of customers such as Coca-Cola, which has used Chronus programs to decrease burnout, isolation and stress, and Amazon, which has incorporated programs on leadership development and affinity groups that led to an 8% increase in employee advancement. The platform, which recently got Impact Level 4-certified by the Department of Defense — indicating its high level of data security — is also used by the U.S. government.

Our CEO David Atmaram Satterwhite talked with Tom Starner at Human Resource Executive about the potential repercussions the latest 'unbossing' trend could have on companies and their employees. According to Satterwhite, while the short-term benefits can be a financial boost and leaner structures, laying off middle managers for the sake of unbossing could come at a much steeper price down the line. For instance, it could increase the workload on other managers or overburden junior employees. There are ways, Satterwhite says, for leadership to acknowledge employees’ growing drive for empowerment while still embracing the value middle managers can bring to an organization. “Middle managers play a vital role in nurturing employee growth,” he says. “They provide mentorship and coaching to junior staff and help establish connections across different departments and levels—fueling engagement and career growth opportunities.”

To start, HR professionals should evangelize the need for keeping employees engaged, and mentorships are part of that work, said David Atmaram Satterwhite, CEO of Chronus, a mentorship software platform. That also means making sure that the ROI on such programs is made clear, so that they keep being funded. While mentorships programs might seem extraneous, they help employees stay engaged, more productive and, in the case of new workers, at the company for what will hopefully be long careers, he said. Like with diversity programs, “we are trying to do our part to help them understand that this is not just the right thing to do…but the science shows it’s a profitable thing to do,” Satterwhite said.

Research shows that employees who feel they belong are more engaged, loyal and likely to promote their workplaces. That's where Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) come in: a powerful tool companies use to enhance belonging and engagement among employees.
