Research in improving maritime safety and betterment of human factor are the core of CEMS (Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety) work. We are delighted to host Kenneth Lim from Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI) in SP. Our team shared our research journey and our collaboration with SMA to achieve the desired outcome. The ultimate goal is to ensure the ease of industry adoption. We shared some of our digital product positioned to enhance the proficiency of seafarers proficiency in handling of alternative marine fuel, increasing their confidence in ship handling via remote access to our ANRS and tool that captured the errors made by trainees in a navigational exercise, amongst the list of our sharing. #innovation #digitalisation #technology #maritimesafety #proficiency #alternativefuel

But it’s when we map behaviour to cognitive workload that we truly grasp the art and science behind the logic of certain actions. At CEMS (Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety), we are keen to explore the synergy between art and science in human performance. By collecting EEG data using advanced technologies from companies like Neurable, we can determine the focus and cognitive workload of trainees—whether they are seafarers, operators, or engineers. This allows us to pinpoint peak performance periods and identify fatigue. On June 25th, we commemorated the Day of the Seafarer (DOTS) with MPA and other organizations at the Singapore Maritime Gallery. Capt Chatur Wahyu , Director of the Singapore Maritime Academy (SMA), highlighted the importance of enhancing seafarer training using interactive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR). He cited training for handling alternative maritime fuels, like methanol, to achieve the IMO's goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. At CEMS (Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety) , we advocate for and collaborate with SMA (Singapore Polytechnic) and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to elevate training standards for our seafarers. 🌊 Advancing Maritime Safety With Our Simulators Sandbox Platform! 🌊 At CEMS (Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety) , our Advanced Navigation Research Simulator (ANRS) – a Full Mission Ship Simulator (FMSS) – has been pivotal in elevating maritime training and safety. Together with our Next Generation Navigation Simulator (NGNS), positioned for autonomous operations and testing out new concept of operations for Maririme Automous Surface Ship (MASS), we aim to achieve the following. 🔍 Enhancing Behavioral Competency With AI and Sensors In Our Smart Assessment Framework 🔍 We leverages state-of-the-art sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor and analyze behavioral competencies in real-time. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) congratulates Pacific International Lines (PTE) Ltd (PIL) on the opening of its new training academy in Singapore!   Since its inception in 1967, PIL has played a pivotal role in shaping the #MaritimeSG landscape and contributing to the Singapore growth story. Today, PIL is the 11th largest shipowner in the Singapore Registry of Ships (SRS), operating a fleet of 100 vessels from its Singapore office and employing close to 700 locals.   The new PIL Academy will provide in-house courses and training to upskill PIL’s seafarers and employees, including to prepare them for alternative fuels and the latest maritime technologies as shipping undergoes a green and digital transformation. The Academy will offer competency-based, stackable micro-credential learning modules that allow customisable learning pathways, incremental learning, as well as tangible recognition of specific skillsets. Through a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Singapore Institute of Technology, local skills management software provider JobKred and the UK-based Maritime Training Academy, PIL Academy & partners will co-design and co-develop various learning modules based on the latest maritime developments. As a close MaritimeSG #tripartite partner over several decades, PIL has worked closely with the government & unions to empower and nurture our local talent, including supporting the MaritimeONE scholarship, and MPA’s Global Internship Award (GIA) to grow and develop young talent. In 2023, PIL & PCL onboarded the Job Redesign Pilot led by the Singapore Maritime Foundation (SMF) & MPA to enhance the attractiveness of Technical Superintendent and Vessel Operator jobs, which are critical to the port ecosystem.   The launch of the new academy will allow PIL to tap on Singapore’s extensive connectivity as an international maritime centre & air/sea hub port, where PIL’s over 4,000 shore-based employees and 4,000 seafarers can be trained. As a crew change hub, it is also convenient for seafarers to undergo training before signing on, or after signing off, vessels in Singapore.   We welcome PIL Academy, along with other training institutes, to join our Maritime Energy Training Facility (METF) launched at SMW2024 to prepare the global maritime workforce for new fuels and alternative propulsion technology. Established by MPA together with 22 partners including global marine engine manufacturers, METF comprises a network of training facilities to provide training in maritime energy-related topics including alternative fuels, energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.   Our people are the engines of the maritime industry, and a skilled, adaptable workforce is essential to the continued growth of global sea trade. It is always important to have meals with your team and connect over lunch. CEMS (Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety), we have a lunch today and had a great catch up and sharing of our lives, personal stuff, apart from our day to day work matters. This is our team comprises of software engineers, AI Scientists, human factor and EEG specialist, technologists, and Coporate team. The spectrum of maritime safety is from shore side safety, onboard safety and ship side safety. Today, we had a good discussion with friends from PSA Singapore, Bee Ling Tan and Yong He in the aspect of enhancing safety for the operators and crew. It's always a great experience to connect with industry partners and learn from them. Capt Kevin Wong from Sea Forrest generously shared his expertise on the electrification of vessels with CEMS (Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety). He discussed the challenges and various battery chemistries suitable for maritime applications. Our key takeaway is that while batteries are crucial, the design of the vessel, including the propeller and propulsion system, is essential for optimizing the operation of electric vessels.
