You may have heard of Tigray, Ethiopia. A conflict in that region has made the news, and just as people began to recover from it, the situation is now being compounded by an El Niño-induced drought. In Tigray, 3.9 million people do not have enough food to eat. The drought is causing poor harvests, a lack of water, and rising malnutrition and disease outbreaks. CRS is working with USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance to ensure that families can get enough food when they need it, acting as a safety net for those who are struggling the most. We’ll provide more information about this partnership and its impact over the next few days and weeks.

This week at the Africa Shelter Forum, CRS Nigeria’s Tidi Caleb talks about Settlement- and Area-based Approaches and how, when we take an approach that addresses people’s comprehensive needs within a defined area, we put families and communities at the center of our response, and build on existing local and government infrastructure. More ⬇️ 🏡 Area- and settlement-based approaches allow us to look at emergency-affected communities holistically—to see each household, family and community as its own unit—and focus on serving their needs according to their unique capacities and priorities. 🏡 Essentially, this invites a bottom-up approach, with affected families and communities defining their recovery. 🏡 Because it is vital that our assistance be informed by the best local, national and international technical expertise, we must look at the strengths of the current system and combine our collective knowledge to best serve those who are most vulnerable. 🏡 We can become more agile and more flexible in serving the true needs of people.

This week, we’re excited to take part in the Africa Shelter Forum to share current perspectives from Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Malawi, and Nigeria. The event is timely and vital for sharing knowledge and experience to meet the escalating needs of displaced families and communities in a region where some humanitarian crises are among the least publicized and funded. Our colleagues and partners will share perspectives on: 🇪🇹 Ethiopia—Localization and promoting the leadership of local actors: When we work with and through local systems to meet the urgent needs of displaced families and communities, we can deliver better housing. 🇲🇼Malawi—Climate Change Adaptation: Climate change is making life difficult for people who have done little to cause it but are bearing the brunt of its consequences. We must provide people with access to comprehensive shelter solutions to adapt to an ever-changing and increasingly unstable environment. 🇧🇫Burkina Faso—Local materials and traditional building techniques: Using local materials and traditional building techniques enhances resilience and development for shelter responses. 🇳🇬Nigeria—Settlements and area-based approaches: By addressing people’s comprehensive needs within a defined area—an approach that is socially-based, geographically bound, inclusive, and multi-sectoral—we put families and communities at the center of our response rather than focusing solely on our own areas of expertise. Additionally, we can build on existing local and government infrastructure. We'll share more over the next few days.

Many of us eat fresh produce weekly, if not daily. But in Gaza, people have gone months without eating any fresh fruit or vegetables. Some fresh food is for sale in the south, but the high price puts it out of reach for most. There is no fresh food in the north. Recently, CRS delivered fresh food to people in Khan Younis as a way to increase their nutrition and add diversity to their diet. After months of ready-to-eat rations, these are welcome additions and support the dignity and choice of the people of Gaza.
