Check it out 👀 Recent op-ed in the TheFutureEconomy.ca features Melissa Sariffodeen, our CEO, on rethinking lifelong learning in the context of economic growth in Canada. As a non-profit that focuses on upskilling professionals to meet their social, economic and professional needs, we think a lot about how people learn. We hope this framing on lifelong learning with an emphasis on unlearning helps us all rethink our existing approaches, so we can pave the way for change. Read on for more: https://lnkd.in/gVUGBx_P

Co-Founder & CEO Canada Learning Code. Helping people leverage the power of technology to build things that matter. Top 40 Under 40.
This is me in 2011. I'm at one of our sold-out #LadiesLearningCode workshops in Toronto. This week, we celebrate the anniversary of the very first brainstorming session, which started it all—over 13 years ago. Since then, Ladies Learning Code has evolved into Canada Learning Code and accomplished so much more than any of us could have imagined then. With the support of thousands of team members, volunteers, partners and funders coast to coast, we've: → created over 1 million learning experiences for people to learn beginner-friendly, technical skills like coding, design, data analytics, AI, cyber and more. → taught hundreds of thousands of people of all ages (from 3 to 83) in classrooms, libraries, community centers and tech offices nationwide. → Led the development of a Pan-Canadian K-12 Computer Science Framework that has supported the addition of Computer Science in the curriculum in grades K-8. Fun fact: CS wasn't in the K-8 curriculum in Canada when we started. Now, it's in almost every province and territory in some way. → helped tens of thousands of people feel more confident with technology, pursue CS in post-secondary, take on new tech responsibilities in their jobs, and entirely change careers into tech. The days were long. There were way too many ups and downs to count. But thirteen years have gone by in a flash. And I wouldn't trade it for anything. “Most people overestimate what they can achieve in a year and underestimate what they can achieve in ten years.” For anyone passionate about an idea or problem, let this be your sign to start. You can't even begin to imagine where it will take you, but I promise it will be worth it. And I'll be here cheering you on along the way, the way so many have for me. Thank you all ❤️ Let's keep building things that matter together 🫶🚀

As we increase our programming around AI to support people’s job-readiness (stay tuned – we’ll share more!) we want to make one thing explicitly clear: we believe AI has potential to do great things for ourselves and for social good, but only if it is also made for and by people from equity-deserving groups who continue to be underrepresented in tech. Our programming has and will continue to equip people with underrepresented genders—including cis women, trans women, trans men, non-binary people, and others who are marginalized because of their gender identity or expression — with a particular focus on Black, Indigenous and other Racialized learners, people in low-income communities and newcomer learners. Read on for insights specific to the QueerTech event we attended in June.
