#CSExtremeApp2024 Day 20 - Shattering the Ice Ceiling Back in our Day 13 update, scientist Lucia Janičová accompanied Appalachian State University professor Baker Perry to give us a tour of the #BaseCamp weather station. On May 12, 2024, she became the first Slovakian woman to summit #MountEverest! ”Her accomplishment made huge news in Kathmandu,” Perry said. In today’s update, Janičová shares some of her thoughts on how climbers can be better stewards to Everest and the importance of investing in environmental education for future generations, including her daughter. Congrats Lucia! #WeatherStation

#CSExtremeApp2024 Day 19 - South Col Triumphs, Bishop Rock Beckons, Everest Throws a Curveball Appalachian State University professor Baker Perry and his Sherpa team successfully upgraded the #SouthCol weather station at 7, 944.6 m (26,065 ft) on Saturday, May 11 with all new sensors and batteries and a data logger. But soon after, extreme and dangerous weather forced them to return to #BaseCamp prior to reaching the #BishopRock station. “The Sherpa team had carried nearly 80 lbs of batteries, data loggers, and sensors up from Base Camp,” said Perry of their journey to South Col. “We had absolutely terrific weather with generally clear skies, light winds, and temperatures in the single digits Fahrenheit.” After a few hours of rest, Perry and his team departed for Bishop Rock at 9:30 pm, but conditions soon began to deteriorate. “By the time we approached the Balcony at 2 am on May 12, the wind had picked up with estimated gusts of 40 mph with falling and blowing snow and temperatures estimated at -20°F with wind chills of -60°F,” Perry said. The unexpected weather would make swapping out batteries and performing other basic maintenance at Bishop Rock nearly impossible, as “merely opening the Pelican case would allow snow to blow in very quickly,” Perry said. After the team exerted a huge amount of energy in the days prior and bad weather conditions, Perry saw the dangers to be too great to continue. Two of the three Sherpa were also beginning to struggle with pace and one had been sick since Camp 2, Perry noted. “In consideration for the safety of the team in the notorious Death Zone (above 8,000 m/26,246 ft), I made the tough decision to abort the climb just below the Balcony at 8429.8 m (27,657 ft) and return to Camp 4 at the South Col,” Perry said. Perry stated that there were several “well-supported teams” that did reach the summit, but reported extremely difficult conditions, near-zero visibility, and suffering from frostbite. “Our three Sherpa plan to attempt to climb again to Bishop Rock next week under more favorable weather conditions to swap out the batteries and bring back photos from the Bishop Rock,” Perry said. While Campbell Scientific is dedicated to sharing the science and research that our environmental monitoring solutions support, the safety of the people we work with and those who could be impacted is our main priority. Although the team didn’t reach the Bishop Rock station, we continue to see this expedition as a huge success. #MtEverest #WeatherStation

#CSExtremeApp2024 Day 18 - Unfazed on the Khumbu Icefall The #KhumbuIcefall is notorious for being one of the most dangerous elements of climbing #MountEverest. Appalachian State University professor Baker Perry shares with us on the lower third of the icefall as he climbs back down to #BaseCamp. Traversing the epic crevasses and scaling the dangerous terrain is another challenge to gaining access to data in extreme environments, requiring experienced mountaineers like Baker and his team.

Many thanks, Michael Wheaton, for sharing news and photos of the installation. It's great to hear how our #SoilVue10 will be used in this flood modeling application in Australia. #CampbellSciOnLocation
Early mornings this week have certainly been fresh in Victoria but absolutely worth it for this spectacular view from Mt Blackwood. I’ve spent the last couple of days installing and commissioning a new rainfall and Soil moisture site for Melbourne Water. This was a first for me, installing a Campbell Scientific SoilVue which will aid in crucial flood modelling for the Greater Melbourne region. ALS Environmental - Australia
