I am excited to announce that Every has raised a $9.5 million seed round led by Base10 Partners, with participation from Y Combinator, Rex Salisbury, and Formus Capital. 1 year ago, I announced the launch of Cambrian as a Solo-GP. It's been an incredible journey since then. Here are some things that have surprised me most along the way. First, a quick snapshot. Fund I is now (1) >60% deployed (2) 22 portco's strong, 80% of which are pre-seed, which means pre-product and pre-revenue. Here's what's surprised me: #1 Solo-GP life is not lonely. When I tell folks, I'm solo, a frequent response is "Isn't that lonely?" The answer is...no! I'm actually more social and more engaged with the ecosystem than I ever was inside a large multi-stage firm. Why? - Large firms have a lot of internal inertia so internal meetings chew up a lot of your time. Everyone is external facing any way, so you spend surprisingly little quality time with your colleagues. - Most importantly, I'm no longer competitive with other investors so I'm collaborative more now than ever. - I also write more checks than I did before, which means I get to spend more time with more founders than ever which is awesome. #2 The number of quality founders has never been higher. Despite all the headlines about "Venture is in free-fall", I have found the complete opposite. At the Pre-Seed and Seed, the ecosystem is alive and well. We are now 10+ years into fintech being a category, which means there are many more investors and experienced operators and founders than ever. Meanwhile, 98% of revenue in financial services flows to incumbents, which means the category is as wide open as ever. #3 The diversity of ideas is immense. People often ask, "what categories are you most excited about?" Looking at the 22 companies I've backed, I never would have thought I'd be working across such a broad range of ideas. I have 10 categories for 22 companies! - Vertical SaaS - Embedded Fintech - Financial Infra - PropTech - InsurTech - Fintech x HealthTech - Fintech x HR - BankTech - Global - Payments learning new things as a result every day. It's been an awesome ride so far. Venture is a long journey so looking forward to another 15+ years!
