Last week, CalOptima Health leaders were honored to attend the 2024 Santa Ana State of the City address. The meeting is a collaboration of leaders from different organizations who are coming together with a shared vision for thriving communities across Orange County. The leadership team will set goals to create a more integrated and effective support system for our vulnerable children, youth and families. First 5 Orange County, formally known as the Children & Families Commission of Orange County, recently appointed CalOptima Health’s Soledad Rivera, Manager, Community Relations, as the Vice Chair of its Board of Commissioners.⁣ ⁣ First 5 Orange County is responsible for the local distribution of revenues collected from the 50-cent tobacco sales tax enacted by Proposition 10 (1998) to promote and fund early childhood health, education and development programs from birth to 5 years old. CalOptima Health and First 5 Orange County partner on several critical initiatives that support our members. Alianza Translatinx released its inaugural report on housing for the transgender, gender-diverse and intersex (TGI) population. The report found that the needs of Orange County's TGI population are not currently being met. CalOptima Health’s Kelly Bruno-Nelson, DSW, Executive Director of Medi-Cal/CalAIM, spoke at the event to share CalOptima Health’s efforts.⁣ “Housing is health,” said Bruno-Nelson. “That’s why CalOptima Health is bolstering our housing services and commitment to health equity for all. Our members who identify as TGI deserve access to health care, housing and support without fear of their safety, prejudice and exclusion.”⁣ The report was compiled from discussions, focus groups and online participation with 159 TGI members. CalOptima Health is a proud sponsor of the survey and provided equity grant funding to increase housing navigation and case management for the TGI community. The event featured storytelling, certificates of recognition, activities for children, raffles and giveaways and more. AccessCal is a member of the Refugee Forum of Orange County (RFOC). Last week, CalOptima Health leaders attended the groundbreaking ceremony of La Veta Village. Through our Housing and Homelessness Incentive Program Round 2 funding opportunity, CalOptima Health granted $1.4 million to HomeAid Orange County in support of their La Veta Village affordable housing project. La Veta Village is a multigenerational affordable housing community for families and seniors, comprised of three historic homes with an accessory dwelling unit added to the rear of each property. The six units will create 20 beds for families and seniors experiencing homelessness.
