“We’re not just connecting patients with resources that are charity-focused or meant to be used in perpetuity like food stamps or housing subsidies, but really empowering patients to have access to the knowledge and resources that can help them uplift themselves...and build generational wealth and well-being.” In an episode of FinThrive, Sheila Phicil, Director of Innovation at BMC's Health Equity Accelerator, discusses how we're making strides in closing racial health equity gaps and improving patient outcomes. We’re providing accessible and exceptional care to make a healthier Boston.
About us
Boston Medical Center models a new kind of excellence in healthcare, where innovative and equitable care empowers all patients to thrive. We combine world-class clinicians and cutting-edge treatments with compassionate, quality care that extends beyond our walls. Together, we're reimagining healthcare for Boston - and the world. As an award-winning health equity leader, our diverse clinicians and staff interrogate racial disparities in care and partner with our community to dismantle systemic inequities. This commitment to equity is the basis of all our work, particularly as 70 percent of our patients are people of color. In addition, nearly 30 percent of our patients speak a primary language other than English, and so we offer all our care and services in over 160 languages, including Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, and more. As an academic medical center, BMC is building the future of health care. Our world-renowned researchers currently oversee over 660 research projects in a wide variety of areas, and as the principal teaching affiliate of Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine, BMC is devoted to training future generations of health care professionals. BMC's clinical expertise, commitment to equity, quality, and sustainability efforts have been consistently recognized by organizations across the country, including the federal government, American Nurses Credentialing Center (Magnet designation), U.S. News, Leapfrog, Human Rights Campaign, the Lown Institute, Becker’s Healthcare, and more. There is a clear and direct relationship between climate change and health, and children’s health in particular. As temperatures rise, children in marginalized communities face increased health risks due to limited access to public cooling spaces. This is why BMC advocates for environmental justice through initiatives like rooftop farms, the Clean Power Prescription program, and solar panels. Read more on #HealthCity: https://bit.ly/4d21bIl

This August 6-7, we are hosting two discussions on Martha’s Vineyard to address and transform the health and well-being of people of color. We are thrilled to announce that we’ve added Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley (MA-07) to Wednesday’s panel: Economic Mobility as a Pathway to Health Equity. Throughout her career as a public servant, Congresswoman Pressley has fought to ensure that those closest to the pain are closest to the power — driving and informing policymaking. This panel will dig into the transformative power of economic advancement as a catalyst for health equity. Don’t miss this dynamic conversation on August 7. Register here: https://bit.ly/3zA4nfA

BMC's Acute Care and Trauma Surgery is proud to partner with the Canton Fire Department on a pilot program – the first in Massachusetts – to provide whole blood to trauma patients before they reach the hospital. Research shows that administering whole blood improves patient outcomes in emergencies, when every minute counts. BMC’s Trauma team and Blood Bank are providing training and support for this pilot, which could serve as a model for expansion to other parts of the Commonwealth. Today, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director, Dr. Mandy Cohen, visited NeighborHealth to discuss BMC's remote blood pressure monitoring program. The award-winning program provides pregnant and postpartum patients with easy-to-use blood pressure cuffs to monitor their blood pressure at home and send data to a HIPAA-compliant web portal using the local cell phone network. This program helps to decrease the rate of severe range hypertension for our patients and addresses gaps in racial disparities. During the conversation, we previewed a new pilot with NeighborHealth, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Secretary Xavier Becerra, MassHealth, and Massachusetts Department of Public Health to improve postpartum maternal health.

BMC's Sabrina Assoumou, MD, spoke with the Boston Globe Media about the recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts due to new variants called "FLiRT." She emphasized the importance of precautions, such as staying up to date with vaccines, testing, and wearing masks in crowded indoor places. While the weather is nice, she also recommends spending more time outdoors to decrease risk of infection. Individuals susceptible to severe illness may also reach out to their healthcare provider to see if they qualify for Paxlovid, an effective antiviral. Read more: https://bit.ly/3zu3020
