About us

Mission Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is a not-for-profit performing and visual arts complex that supports working artists to create, perform and exhibit new works, develops new audiences, and connects the arts to community. The Complex The BCA’s 190,000 square foot campus consists of: • Four theatres. These include the BCA Plaza Theatre with 142 seats; the BCA Plaza Black Box with up to 90 seats, as well as the new, state-of-the-art Stanford Calderwood Pavilion, which houses the Roberts Studio Theatre with up to 209 seats and the Wimberly Theatre with up to 370 seats. • Rehearsal and education space. Rehearsal Hall A and Deane Rehearsal Hall in the Calderwood Pavilion are the main rehearsal spaces for larger companies and are also used for performances, events, and meetings. • The Mills Gallery. The premier, independent non-profit gallery in Boston, showing the work of local and national, established and emerging artists • The Tremont Estates Building. The Artists Studio Building is the working home for over 50 artists. • The Cyclorama. Opened in 1865, the Cyclorama is on the National Register of Historic Places. Featuring a copper skylight dome atop a round brick-lined 23,000 square foot space, the Cyclorama can host up to 1,200 visitors. • The Boston Ballet Building. This Graham Gund-designed building has been home to the Boston Ballet for 16 years. • The Community Music Center of Boston (CMCB). Now in its 99th year, CMCB has positively impacted the lives of thousands of children and adults each year, many of them underserved, through lessons and classes on site, in the Boston Public Schools, through social service agencies and at community centers. • Beehive Jazz Café, is nestled in the BCA complex in space that was once occupied by a black-box theatre at street level and a basement. Now, a dining room on the upper level overlooks the lower level café and stage where live jazz is featured nightly.

BCA Receives $10,000 award from TD Charitable Foundation to support Artist Residencies Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is delighted to be a recipient of a $10,000 grant awarded by TD Charitable Foundation, the philanthropic arm of TD Bank, to support BCA artist residencies. The grant is part of the TD Charitable Foundation’s TD Ready Commitment portfolio and marks the first time BCA has received this award. The foundation's support of BCA allows the organization to help further direct resources to Boston-area artists. BCA is where Boston artists create — through BCA's long- and short-term residency programs, BCA is able to provide artists in the visual, dance and movement, multidisciplinary, and theatre arts, a rare but essential need every artist has: the ability to think, explore, experiment, and push their creative practice forward. This grant from the TD Charitable Foundation is also especially welcome as it will help counter the ongoing crisis of affordable artists’ studio space in the Boston area as they create new groundbreaking work. "TD is committed to initiatives that expand inclusion efforts in the arts for all of our community members,” said Sheryl McQuade, Regional President, Metro New England, TD Bank. “We are proud to be part of what Boston Center for the Arts is doing to help artists in our community access affordable studio spaces and remove barriers to create more cultural opportunities for all." *** ABOUT THE TD CHARITABLE FOUNDATION The TD Charitable Foundation is the charitable giving arm of TD Bank, America's Most Convenient Bank®, one of the 10 largest banks in the U.S., providing over 9.8 million customers with a full range of retail, small business and commercial banking products and services at more than 1,100 convenient locations throughout the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Metro D.C., the Carolinas and Florida. Since its inception in 2002, the Foundation has distributed over $323 million through donations to local nonprofits from Maine to Florida. BCA awarded $300,000 by Wagner Foundation to fully fund 2024 BCA Studio Resident cohort! Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) is thrilled to announce a $300,000 grant from Wagner Foundation to support the BCA Studio Residency program for the next three years. Beginning as early as this fall, this pivotal funding will allow BCA to begin the shift from a subsidized, fee-based residency program to one that is fully awarded. Boston-area artists are welcome to take advantage of this generous grant by applying to the current open call to become one of the ten members of the 2024 BCA Studio Residency cohort, funded by Wagner Foundation over the next three years. The deadline to apply is March 31 at 11pm. This grant now drastically lowers barriers for Boston-area artists to access the critical resources BCA provides. The grant fully underwrites ten studio spaces — a first in the 50+ year history of BCA — and will deepen professional development opportunities for artist residents beginning in 2024. The Wagner award is a crucial first step in the effort by BCA to raise $1.5m over three years to fully award all 41 studio residencies and create a runway that ensures future sustainability for this essential program. “We are thrilled to support the Boston Center for the Arts on this initiative to broaden access to their studio program and to expand the programming at the Boston Art Book Fair. At Wagner Foundation, we recognize that the housing affordability crisis in Boston is affecting artists’ ability to stay and thrive in our communities, and that access to studio space and opportunities to share work in community is a critically needed component,” said Charlotte Wagner, Founder & President of Wagner Foundation. She added, “We are grateful for the vision and long-term commitment BCA has to Boston’s working artists and look forward to what this partnership brings.” BCA Co-Executive Director Emily Day expressed her excitement and gratitude for Wagner Foundation's support: "This catalytic award is a game-changer for us. It empowers us to reach new heights in our mission to provide essential professional development resources to Boston-area artists at pivotal moments in their career. We are deeply thankful to Wagner Foundation for their belief in our work and their commitment to contemporary artists and arts in Boston." BCA has a rich history of fostering artistic communities through a diverse array of arts programs, events, and initiatives. From supporting early career artists to promoting cultural equity, BCA has consistently demonstrated its dedication to making the arts accessible for artists and audiences alike. And now, the Wagner Foundation grant strengthens what BCA continues to do: to fill a vital need for affordable work space and other resources for Boston artists through its artistic and space subsidy programs. • We have some news! As you know, since 2019 Kristi Keefe and Emily Foster Day have been Co-Executive Directors of BCA. But this April, Kristi Keefe will become our Chief Executive Officer, while Emily Day will transition to Massachusetts College of Art and Design to assume the role of Vice President of Advancement and Executive Director of the MassArt Foundation. As Co-Executive Directors, Kristi and Emily have overcome many challenges, most profoundly the COVID-19 pandemic. Through their leadership, BCA successfully weathered those trying times, and then led our efforts to safely reopen BCA to artists and the public. Kristi has been at BCA for over 20 years, serving as Interim Director in 2016, Chief Operating Officer from 2016–2019, and Co-Executive Director since 2019. Kristi will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer on April 12, 2024, and will continue to lead us in better aligning our physical spaces with the needs of our evolving residencies and programs so we can ensure that all of Boston’s artists continue to thrive. Over Emily’s nine-year tenure, she has made BCA stronger. She has overseen the creation and expansion of a number of innovative residencies and programs, dramatically helped increase philanthropic support, and — together with Kristi — has brought our mission into alignment with the values of racial and cultural equity that we aspire to center in all that we do. We are very grateful for her leadership in countless ways, and wish Emily the very best for the future. We are also thrilled to welcome Zaquia Mahler Salinas as our Senior Director of Artist Programs & Residencies. Zaquia joins us as the fourth member of the senior leadership team. This team will support Kristi during this leadership transition. Zaquia will also play a key role aligning the strategic vision of the organization with BCA programs, all while centering the professional needs of Boston-based performing and visual artists. Please join us in congratulating Kristi, Emily, and Zaquia on their new positions. Photos: Carlie Febo; Kirk Hensler. #BosArts #BostonArts
