The #NATOSummit in Washington, D.C., has concluded, marking NATO's 75th anniversary with major decisions and plans for the future. Our Embassy Team was happy to welcome the Belgian delegation led by PM Alexander De Croo and Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib. During the NATO Summit, the Alliance celebrated numerous milestones and achievements, as well as newest members Finland and Sweden. It also sent out a powerful message to the world by reaffirming their commitment and readiness to defend democracy, freedom and security. We look back at the 3 days of the NATO Summit in Washington. Allies made decisions to further strengthen deterrence and defense, bolster long-term support to Ukraine and deepen global partnerships. The pledges include: - More immediate military aid for Ukraine, including air defense systems and F-16 jets. - A comprehensive support package to Ukraine that guarantees assistance to Ukraine in the long term. - Accelerating defense industrial capacity and production and to bolster transatlantic defense cooperation. - NATO will directly coordinate financial support for Ukraine via the new NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU). - Ukraine is on an irreversible path to NATO membership. - Deepening ties with Indo-Pacific partners. Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib are in Washington, DC, for the #NATOSummit, a historic moment of unity and strength among Allies. Last night, leaders from across the globe gathered at the Mellon Auditorium to commemorate 75 years since the signing of the #NorthAtlanticTreaty. This landmark location was chosen for the celebrations because it was there, on April 4, 1949, that the North Atlantic Treaty was signed. 75 years ago, Belgium was one of the twelve founding members who stood behind a shared vision of a peaceful and prosperous world. In his speech opening the Summit, President Joe Biden announced that Allies will provide #Ukraine with crucial air defense systems. The Allies reiterated their strong and unwavering support to Ukraine as its people bravely resist Russia’s aggression. PM De Croo and President Zelensky recently signed a security agreement which includes the delivery of thirty F-16 fighter jets to bolster Ukraine’s air defense against Russia. The 32 NATO Allies are charting the course to safeguard their one billion citizens and uphold our shared values amidst today's pressing security challenges. In the margins of the #NATOSummit in Washington DC, Ambassador Jean-Arthur Régibeau was honored to host Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib for an in-depth discussion with #MiddleEast specialists and US officials. Everything must be done to stop the violence, to free the hostages, and to bring sufficient humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The historic #NATOSummit begins tomorrow, gathering heads of state and government from #NATO member countries to mark the Alliance's journey since its founding in 1949. Starting from the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949, famously known as the Washington Treaty, NATO has grown from 12 founding members to 32 nations dedicated to safeguarding peace and security. At the Treaty’s signature, Belgian PM Paul-Henri Spaak delivered a speech in which he stressed the importance of NATO in ensuring world peace. It was the first time in history that a military alliance was formed to preserve peace and not to wage war. Finland and Sweden became NATO's newest members in 2023 and 2024. The Alliance's solidarity has never been more evident, especially in the face of challenges like Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which underscores the importance of transatlantic cooperation. Belgium, a proud founding member along the US, continues to play a crucial role as a host nation to two NATO Headquarters, reaffirming its commitment to NATO's mission of collective defense and international stability. The civil-military headquarters have been located in Brussels since 1966 and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) military headquarters in Mons since 1967. At this week’s summit, NATO will reaffirm its unwavering commitment to #Ukraine and discuss the future of the Alliance. NATO's enduring legacy of peace, security, and freedom for over one billion people in Europe and North America stands strong, guided by its core principles of deterrence and defense, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security. The primary aim of the North Atlantic Treaty was to create a pact of mutual assistance. Every participating country agreed that solidarity and collective defense were at the heart of the Treaty. Article 5 provides that if a NATO Ally is the victim of an armed attack, each and every other member of the Alliance will consider this act of violence as an armed attack against all members and will take the actions it deems necessary to assist the Ally attacked. 🇧🇪🇪🇺 The successful and productive Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 has come to an end. It has been six months full of high-level meetings, decisions, and intense collaborations! Thanks to the Belgian spirit of compromise, we were able to conclude more than 70 agreements on protecting citizens, migration, strengthening economic competitiveness, defense, green transition, support to Ukraine and future EU accessions. This dealmaking presidency also took forward the EU’s enlargement process as a beacon for stability and prosperity on the European continent. As we conclude the six-month Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024, we gathered with esteemed Belgian, European, and American guests. Last night, at our closing reception in Washington, DC, we celebrated not only the achievements of the Belgian EU Presidency but also honored Ambassador Jean-Arthur Régibeau, whose four-year tenure in the US will conclude at the end of July. Throughout this Presidency, Belgium has advanced significant political agreements across various fronts. From unwavering support for #Ukraine, marked by the start of EU accession negotiations, to substantial progress in defense, security, migration, climate action, economy, competitiveness, and the safeguarding of our shared values, Belgium has displayed steadfast leadership.
