💡 Positive Education Forum 2024 💡  *Building Resilience for Change * The Education Bureau has recently launched the "4Rs Mental Health Charter", which encourages all schools in Hong Kong to implement specific strategies in the 2024/25 academic year to enhance the resilience and well-being of the school community.  Bei Shan Tang Foundation has been actively catalyzing and supporting the development of Positive Education in Hong Kong since 2014. Over the years, the data collected and evidence observed have demonstrated that holistic Positive Education implementation can help students build resilience banks, providing them with the resources and capacity to withstand, bounce back and bounce forward for growth while navigating life’s many changes and uncertainties. Under the theme of “Building Resilience for Change”, this year’s Positive Education Forum combines scientific research and frontline practices to explore how Positive Education can effectively empower students to build their resilience bank, enabling them to navigate changes for educational and personal growth. We are honored to have Ms. Michelle Li, JP (Permanent Secretary for Education of the Education Bureau, HKSAR) to officiate the event, along with Professor Marc Brackett (Founding Director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence) to share on the importance of social-emotional learning in schools today, and Professor Cheng Kai Ming (Emeritus Professor and Honorary Fellow at the University of Hong Kong) to participate in the dialogue. Besides, we also invited Outward Bound Hong Kong - 香港外展訓練學校 (OBHK), as well as representatives from primary and secondary schools who collaborated with us for years, to share their experience in building students’ resilience through Positive Education practices. • 🌟Did You Know That Breaks Helps Boost Productivity?   Have you ever wondered why there is intermission in music concerts or stage performances? Research has uncovered an interesting finding - people actually enjoy songs more when there are breaks in the concert, and they pay more attention to the performance. But why is that?   Deep within the intricate functioning of our brain, there’s a phenomenon called #habituation. It’s our innate tendency to become less responsive to the familiar over time. And intermissions in the concert effectively reduce habituation, allowing us to prolong the initial joy.    According to the economist Tibor Scitovsky, “Pleasure results from incomplete and intermittent satisfaction of desires”. This means that no matter how captivating something is, its allure diminishes after a while. But fret not! There's a simple way to revitalize the magic: chopping up the good experiences into bits.     By taking things one step at a time and savoring each moment, we can decrease habituation. Inserting short breaks into pleasant experiences can have a significant impact. Imagine we had all our public holidays combined with a long vacation, and the rest of the time was solely dedicated to work or study? But if our holidays were scattered throughout the year, we would generally feel better.   So let's make the most of our experiences and keep the sparkle alive! By embracing breaks and interruptions, we can enhance our #enjoyment and #appreciation of the things we love. • 🌟 Winners of the 2024 Bei Shan Tang Prizes in Chinese Art History 📖   Congratulations to the recipients of this year's Bei Shan Tang Prizes in Chinese Art History! To foster dialogue among scholars of Chinese art, Bei Shan Tang Foundation (BST) has supported the establishment of Association for Chinese Art History (ACAH) under the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) since 2022. These Prizes administered by ACAH, including 1 Monologue Prize and 1 Catalogue Prize, is the first such awards dedicated exclusively to scholarship in Chinese art history and to recognise outstanding contributions from both the academia and museum fields. This year’s Prizes were presented during the AAS Annual Conference on 16 March 2024.   🌄2024 Bei Shan Tang Monograph Prize 🎨 Congratulations to Julianne Noth, Professor of East Asian Art History at Freie Universität Berlin, on winning the Monograph Prize for her exceptional work, Transmedial Landscapes and Modern Chinese Painting. Published by Harvard University Asia Center, this groundbreaking monograph sheds light on the mid-1930s, a period of intense artistic and theoretical productivity in China. Noth's research delves into the works of 3 influential artists, Huang Binhong, He Tianjian, and Yu Jianhua, offering fresh insights into their formative years and collaborative endeavours through artworks and publications.   📸2024 Bei Shan Tang Catalogue Prize 🏛️ A big round of applause to the Peabody Essex Museum for their catalogue, Power and Perspective: Early Photography in China. Co-edited by Stephanie Tung, the Byrne Family Curator of Photography, and Karina Corrigan, Associate Director – Collections and the H.A. Crosby Forbes Curator of Asian Export Art, this generously illustrated volume, jointly published by the Museum and Yale University Press, draws from the Museum's remarkable collection of photographs. Power and Perspective presents a thought-provoking reassessment of the history of photography in 19th century China, exploring the intersection of commerce, conflict, and the medium's entanglement with European imperialism. It also examines the representations of racial hierarchy within the context of colonial legacies.   Let us also express our gratitude to ACAH for administering the Prizes. Once again, we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the winners of this year's Bei Shan Tang Prizes, and all those involved in creating these remarkable publications 📚!   *Photos courtesy of AAS and Alabastro Photography   Want to know more?
