About us
In 1975, Tim Barnard moved to Montana with an idea that he could start his own construction company. He had $1,000, two shovels, a pick, and all of his worldly possessions in the cab of his pickup. His grandmother loaned him $3,500 to cover his first bond on a $17,000 project. Since then, he’s never looked back. Today, Barnard is a large heavy-civil construction company with projects worldwide. People building for People. That's what we do at Barnard. Whether we're raising a dam in Alaska, constructing a reservoir in Texas, tunneling under downtown San Francisco, repairing a penstock in British Columbia, or strengthening and improving the integrity of a natural gas pipeline in a Sacramento suburb, our people arrive at our projects with a determination to do the best for their communities and be the best in the industry. Our work also encompasses hydropower, power transmission, marine, water and sewer pipeline, and environmental construction. Most often our projects include several of these elements. They always present a challenge. They affect our neighbors as well as our families. We live where we work, so we come to know our projects personally. We build for People.

Internship Spotlight: Theo Martin is a Civil Engineering student at Boise State, and a Project Engineer Intern with Barnard this summer. Theo is working on the Gallatin South Rail Loop Landfill project in Gallatin, TN. As part of an effort to clean the Gallatin Fossil Plant located in Sumner County, the Tennessee Valley Authority is constructing a new landfill to provide space for future coal combustion residual (CCR) hauling and final disposal of ash. The project includes the construction of Cells 4 and 5, which span across 32.2 acres and 34.9 acres of lined landfill, respectively. Barnard will also construct new sediment basins and a contaminated stormwater basin, which will require 185,000 CY of rock excavation and over 1.5 million CY of earthworks. Other work includes construction of HDPE piping systems (17,500 LF of leachate pipe and 5,400 LF of contaminated stormwater pipe), installation of 25,800 LF of 25kV cable, excavation work by blasting, development and maintenance of an onsite borrow, site electrical works, demolition of an existing conference center, and haul road construction. Thank you to Barnard for participating in our career fairs and providing these valuable internship opportunities!

We are proud to share that Barnard Construction Company, Inc. and CBNA (Civil & Building North America Inc.) were selected by Enbridge to construct the Great Lakes Tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. Combined, our teams have built more than 100 tunnels in 15 countries equaling more than 372 miles of tunnel. A number of those projects involved geologic conditions similar to those that will exist in the Straits of Mackinac. Learn more about this exciting project below.
Enbridge has chosen contractors for construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel. Enbridge has retained a joint venture partnership between Barnard Construction Company, Inc. and Civil and Building North America, Inc., two industry-leading tunneling companies, to lead construction of the Great Lakes Tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac. We are preparing to begin construction as soon as possible following the receipt of environmental permits for the tunnel project from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
