July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This month, we focus on the unique mental health challenges racial and ethnic minorities in the US face. According to the FDA, in 2020, fewer than one in every two African American adults received mental health care. In 2018, Asian Americans were 60% less likely to receive mental health treatment than non-Hispanic Whites. Obstacles like a lack of health insurance, less access to treatment, and stigma are significant barriers. For our staff retreat, AACHC team members and their families spent an incredible afternoon at AMC Centerpoint 11 in Tempe for a private viewing of "Inside Out 2." AACHC team members and partners from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health recently packed over 250 harm reduction kits to help prevent overdose deaths and save lives. The kits contain materials to detect harmful additives in unregulated drug supplies like fentanyl and xylazine, which increase the risk of overdose. The kits will be distributed to community health centers and placed in Narcan vending machines.
