In a story that’s making a SPLASH around Florida, a Florida pool contractor, Ricardo Villarroel, was recently sentenced to 18 years in prison for perpetuating a deceitful scheme that preyed on nearly 100 homeowners across the state. This calculated scam robbed the affected families of more than $1 million where victims were lured into a trap with the promise of affordably priced pool installations. Compelled by these seemingly opportune offers, homeowners provided substantial deposits in good faith, expecting to receive the agreed-upon services. However, the promises made by Villarroel and his cohorts were hollow, leaving many with incomplete or, in some cases, uninitiated projects, as the deposits evaporated into the pockets of these fraudsters. The contractors' failure to fulfill their contractual obligations resulted not only in financial detriment but also inflicted considerable emotional distress upon the unsuspecting homeowners. This story serves as both a warning and a didactic tool for others. Homeowners should fervently research and authenticate the integrity of contractors before signing contracts or checks. Verification of licensure, scrutinization of past customer reviews, and checking with DBPR are critical steps to protect yourself and your funds against such unethical practices. https://lnkd.in/eeKH3Aft
