Advancing Evidence. Improving Lives.
About us
Since 1946, the American Institutes for Research (AIR) has been advancing evidence to evolve systems, improve lives, and ultimately create a better, more equitable world. We are a nonprofit research and technical assistance institution working to solve some of the most urgent challenges in the U.S. and around the world. Our experts in education, health, workforce, human services, and international development follow the evidence to find and apply solutions that will work. Our work helps policymakers make important decisions based on evidence, and we work with leaders, organizations, and communities to create more effective programs. We never stop digging to find what works and where we have more to learn.

Between 2009-2019, nearly $100B was budgeted for the Post-9/11 GI Bill (PGIB), which provides #postsecondary #education benefits to #veterans and their families. The latest results from an in-depth study of the PGIB provide evidence on the #educational and #workforce outcomes for veterans who did and did not use these education benefits for themselves, and those who used the benefits to attend different types of colleges, including public, nonprofit, and for-profit institutions. The study, conducted by AIR, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Census Bureau, was made possible through unprecedented interagency sharing of data.

This time last year, the U.S. #SupremeCourt overturned the use of #AffirmativeAction in college admissions decisions. Leading up to the decision, senior researcher and college admissions expert Alexandria Walton Radford reflected on why college admissions don't always feel transparent, the benefits of diverse campuses for students' cognitive and social growth, and why we need to get serious about addressing the root causes of inequity in #education. https://lnkd.in/g2GGgt6Q

States are required to identify if children need English-learner services and special education services so that all students have access to the instruction and supports they need. However, identifying English learners who also need special education services is a persistent problem, and a lack of follow-up after evaluation means that many schools aren't accurately distinguishing between language acquisition needs and disability-related needs. AIR's Lisa Hsin offers insights and recommendations for states in Education Week.
