About us
Alpha Public Schools is a network of public charter TK-12 schools that aims to put scholars on the path to college success – and keep them there. All Alpha students will develop not only the knowledge, but also the skills and character traits they will need to succeed in college and career. Founded in 2010 by a dedicated, experienced team that has achieved extraordinary academic results with students in other under-resourced communities, Alpha was created in response to overwhelming community and parent demand in the San Francisco Bay Area. In fall 2012, we opened our first school, Alpha: Blanca Alvarado School in east San Jose, California. The school serves grades 5-8. In fall 2014, we opened our second school, Alpha: Jose Hernandez School, and in 2015 we opened our first high school, Alpha: Cindy Avitia High School. In 2016, we joined forces with the highly acclaimed Cornerstone Academy that serves grades K-8. At the beginning of 2019, we started building out the elementary grades at both Alpha: Blanca Alvarado and Alpha: Jose Hernandez, with the goal of them growing into TK-8 schools in the future. Alpha is driven by our mission, vision and core beliefs- that all students can learn, that our scholars belong in college, and that student growth is a reflection of the teacher’s practice. Alpha is fiercely entrepreneurial and we are focused on supporting our scholars as they grow into self-reliant leaders who will achieve success in their school, college, and career. We're committed to finding educators who value and amplify the diverse experiences of our staff and scholars and their families, and who care deeply about addressing the inequities that exist in education.

The end of the school year is a time of reflection and transition. As we think about the various stages of transitions happening at Alpha--Kindergartners moving onto first grade; eighth graders promoting to high school; seniors stepping into their post-secondary lives; staff stepping into new careers within Alpha; other staff parting ways with Alpha for new adventures--we are overwhelmed with excitement, joy, and gratitude. The 2023-2024 school year has been full of challenges, opportunities, and accomplishments. Through it all, we made it to the last day of school together in community. We hope that everyone has a restful and restorative summer, and we look forwarding to welcoming teachers and students back to campus for an amazing 2024-2025 school year!

The KQED team's coverage of the FAFSA roll-out and related challenges highlights one of the biggest challenges that many students and families--particularly first-generation, low-income, and mixed-status students and families--experienced this past college application cycle. We are incredibly grateful for David's leadership and that his insights and expertise were brought into the conversation around the impacts of FAFSA on California students and families. We also thank and recognize all educators everywhere who have supported students and families through the challenging FAFSA roll-out and the entire college admissions process. As David mentions in this article, despite all the challenges that they face, our students are “literally transcending their circumstances; they’re narrowing that achievement gap." #FAFSA #EducationalEquity
With the help of Shara Hegde and the KQED team, I was featured in KQED's latest article that brings attention to the FAFSA debacle that plagued college-going students all across the nation. This fiasco has disproportionately affected our first-gen, low-income communities that come from mixed status families/backgrounds. For all of our students and families who may feel as though they have no voice, educators like myself will continue to highlight these travesties and speak out to create change and demand a better system for our students. Thank you to all of my colleagues who made this article possible. Let's keep fighting the good fight in closing opportunity and achievement gaps for our community! I hope you enjoy the article, and I thank you in advance for sharing and continuing to bring attention to this important issue.

Today is #TalentTuesday and we're celebrating the work of one of our amazing elementary school teachers, Yuri Mbongwo! Yuri is a Third Grade Teacher at Alpha: Blanca Alvarado and is also the Coach of the school's Girls on the Run team! This is Yuri's second year at Alpha, but has been working in education for five years. Yuri was attracted to Alpha because of our community: "I wanted to serve primarily minority students. I enjoy working with these students because they bring me joy and I have built so many wonderful relationships with them!" This year, Yuri has focused on developing as a teacher and seeing her students growth, while building a community within my classroom. Relationships and community are central to her work as an educator, as is her belief in ALL students. "My teaching philosophy is that I hold my students to high standards because I believe in them and I know the potential they have to succeed in whatever it is they want to do in life. I am teaching future leaders so my job is to shape them into confident leaders of tomorrow." We're so grateful to have you on the Alpha team, Yuri! #MeetOurTeam #TalentTuesday #TeacherTuesday
