AFWERX Agility Prime partner, Joby Aviation, is developing a hydrogen-powered version of its vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft that could enable longer routes between cities. Hydrogen fuel cells — already used in cars, trucks and industrial equipment — could be a game-changer for the aviation industry. Last month, Joby successfully flew a 523-mile demonstration flight using a first-of-its-kind hydrogen-electric air taxi. The test flight involved a converted prototype of Joby's eVTOL aircraft, outfitted with a liquid hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen-electric propulsion. “[We are] also keen on hydrogen because it supports the military's clean energy goals,” said Jacob Wilson, Agility Prime acting branch chief. On Tuesday, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst played a vital role in a historic first cargo flight as part of a demonstration of the ALIA CTOL battery-powered fixed-wing aircraft, from BETA Technologies. This aircraft has a range of 250 nautical miles and the capacity to seat up to five passengers. The National Aerospace Research and Technology Park NARTP (National ARTP) tested the aircraft’s cargo, showcasing that moving cargo between Dover Air Force Base and Joint Base MDL is advantageous because it saves time and many other valuable resources. "This cargo logistics demo builds on a collaboration between AFWERX and BETA Technologies that began in 2019,” said Andrew Lau, AFWERX Agility Prime program manager. “We are proving that electric aviation is a reliable and cost effective solution for critical defense use cases." Our SpaceWERX director, Arthur Grijalva, was recently interviewed by SpaceNews to discuss how the organization is collaborating with the private sector to bring cutting edge technology to the military. Based in Los Angeles, SpaceWERX is making bets on startups and small businesses to the tune of about $460 million a year in research and development contracts. “We are not just building widgets or just doing studies. We’re actually trying to build end-to-end capabilities,” says Arthur Grijalva, director of SpaceWERX. SpaceWERX has set a goal to help guide promising space technologies through the “valley of death,”referring to the gap between early-stage funding and the point where a technology becomes commercially viable or ready for large-scale government adoption. Projects run by SpaceWERX leverage SBIR/STTR funds. “If we can tap into the innovation that’s coming out of small businesses, there’s just so much ingenuity there that you could get a lot more bang for your buck,” said Grijalva.
