We are excited for Todd Leighton, AeroTEC's Director of Experimental Products, to be presenting at the Aerospace Testing International Show this fall in Toulouse. #ATDS2024 #hybridaviation #aerospaceengineering
Check out the Q&A with Todd Leighton, Director of Experimental Products at AeroTEC - Aerospace Testing Engineering & Certification Inc., and learn more about what he has in store for #ATDS2024! 🎤 Todd will take part in the session 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 where he will explain how AeroTEC recently achieved technology demonstration flights of a Bombardier Dash 8 airplane heavily modified with a hydrogen powertrain on one nacelle on a very compressed timescale. He will discuss system safety philosophies for risk mitigation, potential architectures for hydrogen-powered aircraft, and how digital engineering tools like simulation, generative design, and model-based systems engineering can dramatically shorten development timelines. AeroTEC helped support the design and modification of the magniX battery-electric eCaravan – which had a successful first flight in May 2020. Our involvement included the modification to the caravan motor mount that provided mounting for the drives, cooling system, govern oil system, sensors, and pumps. This mod fit directly into the existing engine mount support truss, so no modification was made to the firewall truss. This ensured the same standard of safety for the occupants if an issue did arise, and did not require a safety assessment to be done. Additionally, a stress analysis was performed on the modification and all components showed positive margins, meaning each connector piece had enough factor of safety. It also followed a 14 CFR part 23 approach, a standard FAA safety process all certified aircrafts must meet, which ensured it was safe and the modification was not having a negative impact.
