The utility industry faces the challenge of balancing stringent regulatory compliance with limited resources. Traditional inspection methods are labor-intensive and risky. However, aerial robotics are revolutionizing the way utilities manage compliance. Drones can perform faster, safer, and more cost-effective inspections, allowing companies to meet growing demands without increasing headcount. For example, a utility company used drones to inspect 10,000 poles in a week, documenting assets with geotagged images and creating a comprehensive library for future reference. This not only saved time and money but also improved safety and accuracy. Embracing such innovative solutions is essential for the future of utility compliance. California's ambitious plan to achieve 25 GW of offshore wind by 2045 has been finalized. The California Energy Commission’s strategy includes streamlined permitting processes, port infrastructure development, and strategies to mitigate ecological impacts. By 2030, the state aims for 2 GW to 5 GW of floating offshore wind, a technology necessary due to the deep waters off the West Coast. The plan also addresses workforce development through academic pathways and apprenticeship programs, highlighting the critical need for port sites to manufacture and assemble the massive wind turbines. By 2045, California envisions a significant buildout of port infrastructure to support this renewable energy push, potentially utilizing 16 large and 10 small port sites. Check it out on Utility Dive:
