What skills and qualities should you prioritize when recruiting for your startup?

Hiring for effective problem-solvers who can optimize resource utilization and foster creativity in finding low-cost, high-impact solutions is critical.

In my SaaS startup - Chiyo Inc., I've seen firsthand the value of problem-solving skills. Problem-solving is key across roles—it's the fuel for innovation and a trait I actively seek in team members to navigate the ebbs and flows of startup growth."

I read an article many years ago titled: "Attitude determines altitude". Skills can always be taught. But you can't beat sheer enthusiasm to learn and to strive for more. It's about being open-minded, listening and having the attitude to want more. It's all about mindset and attitude.

Finding the product-market fit (The core of Agile) is a journey with uncertainty, and it's here where adaptability and resilience become indispensable. In my time developing Ziel Lab, the capacity to pivot strategy in response to market feedback was crucial. Whether it was marketers adjusting campaigns in real-time or customer service reps turning challenges into opportunities for product enhancement, these qualities made all the difference.

Another important quality to consider is the understanding and the belief in your product. A disconnected worker will never give his 100% and this will be reflected in your product and your sales. One key practice that we follow during hiring is we ask candidates to build use-cases of the product, so that we understand if a candidate truly understands the product. On top of the that, we ask the candidate to make assumptions on the result of the use-case to understand how well they understand the results your product can drive for your customers.
