How do you keep your team up-to-date on product development trends?

Keeping your team well-informed about product development trends is vital for staying competitive and building client confidence. Often, teams struggle with limited bandwidth for research. To tackle this, collaboration is key. Foster a culture of sharing knowledge and group harmony. Engaging with stakeholders, both internally and externally, is crucial. Product development is a team work. hence It is important to your share your idea with your team. Make a target and protocol so that everybody knows what is objective. Motivate them for reading various articles related to your product. try to give them exposers , send them for training, workshops /conference so that your team will remain updated with current developments. Most important is to respect your team members and their suggestions .

When I worked for a start up they had an email ideas@... for the team sharing ideas, questions, concerns, etc. Moreover, we had periodic brainstorm meetings to discuss it in group. Everything they did I recommend. They made us feel part of the project and understand the value of our product and work to the market, to the people. And it is what really matters. If we (the team) are not involved to make it happen, there will be no motivation. We must keep the human motivation on. Business are made from people, not the contrary.

The way I approach updating my sales team on product development trends is multi-tiered. For a current, newsworthy event affecting one of our accounts, I will immediately share the findings with the account manager handling the account. For weekly or monthly industry newsletters, I may forward an entire newsletter, but highlight the most relevant 3-4 articles. For a general topic such as traction motors for EVs, I may collect a number of articles (up to 4) with links and send it out to the technical/sales teams, once a month. For a more involved, deep-dive technical white paper, I may share this once a quarter. The key to keeping your team updated is you must read the articles yourself, first, to determine its worthiness to share.

It is crucial to align people around the company's values and goals. Thus you can share your vision as a leader and create a corporate culture. Open communication is the cornerstone to creating transparency that enhances the exchange of ideas and brainstorming. These are the main prerequisites for team collaboration and efficiency.

Research reports. I get my hands on industry research on as many competitors as possible from investment banks. I read them obsessively and share them with my team. I find newsletters and periodical on industry published by individuals and trade associations. These can offer insight on trend analysis, deals and financings. Finally I regularly attend and SPEAK at industry trade shows and events to stay informed on competitors and the latest trends both micro and macro.

Ensure these are accessible to the team. Feedback Loops: Encourage open communication for feedback and suggestions. Create an environment where team members feel comfortable sharing their thoughts. One-on-One Check-Ins: Periodically meet with team members individually to discuss their progress, address concerns, and provide personalized feedback. Transparency: Foster a culture of transparency by sharing both successes and challenges. This helps the team understand the bigger picture.

Communication and collaboration are key. Create an environment where commercial teams communicate regularly with product teams. This is beneficial for two reasons, firstly the commercial team is able to provide actionable recommendations and market led feedback to product. The product teams are then able to present new features, services and solutions, partly based on the feedback from commercial. Each team should have follow up tasks between meetings.
