Show respect for your colleagues by intervening when they are interrupted, allowing them to complete their thoughts. It is also just as important to ensure that team members receive the recognition they deserve, and seize opportunities to publicly appreciate their achievements. Avoid making assumptions about individuals' readiness to take on challenging projects or travel; you may be surprised by their willingness and capabilities.

First, the voices you hear from are only as diverse as your workforce. You should actively be ensuring that you haven't built a team that looks/thinks/and acts like you. Once you have that, you need to encourage participation by offering many channels of participation to appeal to the various personalities and then to demonstrate that it is safe to participate. Entertain difficult ideas. Often we move too quickly and offer only one option. Companies that take an immediate action on a good idea will gain the trust of the team to participate in the future. "They actually listened to me!"

From my experience you have to cater for different personalities. e.g. Provide diverse ways for people to share ideas, like anonymous suggestion boxes, online forums, or written reports, alongside meetings. Facilitate discussions where everyone has a chance to contribute taking turns ensuring even the quiet ones have their voices heard. Also, encourage participants to submit thoughts or questions beforehand to spark discussion during meetings.

Diversity of voice is a gold mine for leaders. Create a culture where everyone has a seat and voice at the table. If you notice someone is more quiet than other, invite them to speak. Empower teams to take risks, try new things and without fear of failure. Create an open feedback culture, where team members can share openly about both successes and failures. To learn from each other for the future. Lead with empathy and kindness.

Amplifying diverse voices in leadership involves implementing comprehensive development schemes and creating an engaging workplace, where diverse voices are valued. Start with talent development programs that inspire employees to become future leaders and brand ambassadors — the more open, inclusive, and inviting these career schemes are, the more likely you will be able to develop a diverse force of leaders. A process, that will simultaneously attract a more diverse landscape of employees — and so the positive reinforcement begins.

I believe it's crucial to highlight the different backgrounds and experiences ones have. Many times people get to the table with an opposing idea from a defensive position. They are ready for the battle. They expect it. It's sad but part of human nature and how every one of us has different skeletons in our closets. Empathy helps a lot. And then creating a space where you are genuinely curious to understand where that opinion is coming from. Learning their perspective and reason behind their choices. I just love to hear and grasp the reasoning of those I don't necessarily agree with. When I am open to that, everything shifts. They feel listened and their guard goes down. Showcase the organization's commitment to fostering diverse voices.

Perspectives different than mine - uncomfortable! How inclusive is the data and feedback you are using to inform your global DEI framework? Have you taken the time to attend some ERG meetings and ask for survey input from all members, or rely on a single perspective? It can open up new channels to learn and connect.

I would add intentional and inclusive sponsorship to “modeling and mentoring diversity.” We know that research highlights the importance of sponsorship for Women and People of Color. I think the authenticity of the “amplifying of diverse voices” is also crucial. If voices are amplified, but the overall culture is not inclusive and there are not equitable practices established (pay, advancement, development, project assignment, etc.,) then the amplification can feel performative or transactional. Lastly, I would hope that the amplification of diverse voices is focused on consistently and not just during heritage months or weeks/months.

Be an ally for the unheard. In every room, meeting, & conversation, a leader must recognize: - Who is not here but should be? Extend the invite. - Who is quiet? Make it safe to be heard. - Who is outnumbered? Amplify that perspective.
